Be very famous or an extremely talented performer? So many young people have their sights set on fame and fortune with no regard of craft. What is more important to you and why? In other words would you rather be Paris Hilton or Helen Mirren.
Discuss.

Posted: 9/21/04 at 12:57pmHelen Mirren without a doubt. Talent will win you a small but dedicated following and the respect of your peers. Being famous will end up with you being hated.

This MAY be the biggest a$$hole post I've ever written...but here goes:
I know what it's like to be very talented but live in obscurity.
Mama wants to know the fame...know what I'm saying?

Posted: 9/21/04 at 1:01pmThat's not an asshole post, robbiej. You know why? You have the talent to back yourself up for when (not if) you become famous. People like Paris Hilton cannot say the same.

No question- talent over fame. The real treat is knowing deep down that you're good.
Oh and Helen Mirren is an acting GOD (in the words of Meryl Streep). Love her. She also looked amazing at the Emmy's the other day.

Posted: 9/21/04 at 1:11pmRobbie, I am not talking about someone in your situation who is struggling to make a living doing a craft they have a passion for. I am talking about people whose passion is being rich and famous. There is a difference. You are a dedicated artist who just wants a little respect and not have to do your day job in order to make ends meet. But I’ll bet you would rather struggle a bit longer than sell out for a guest shot on “Amish in the City.”

Posted: 9/21/04 at 1:14pmTalent - more respect and privacy. I don't know if I could stand being mobbed in public or having every move photographed and misrepresented in some heinous assumption just because the press love to see celebrities suffer.

Oh I know.
And, obviously, I would choose talent over fame.
However...I'd like to be rich. Very, very rich. And not have to do anything again. Ever. For the rest of my life.
Not that I wouldn't do anything...I just don't want to have to!

I'm with you on that, Robbie

Oh, robbiej, you know you have an obscure and loyal fan base. To us you are famous. Wish that I had the dough to throw your way and make your dream of wealth come true. It would be nice to have the luxury of picking what projects you desire to do. Then you could really shine.
Fame can get ugly, but talent is forever.

whenever I need a pick me up (like today, with my sinuses freaking out), I can always count on one particularly shiny star to boost me up!

I would love to be rich and famous because of my talent. However, if I had to choose between the two, I would pick talent. That may be the reason I am not famous and rich. Too many opportunities that I've turned down because they seemed a waste of time. I actually received a notice recently about auditions for a reality show and didn't attend. I wouldn't want to be famous for being famous. I'd rather be on a stage in a small theater making almost nothing and be proud of the work I'm doing.
How many people are going to care about Paris when her 15 minutes of fame is over? True artistry lasts forever and isn't worth giving up for a line of clothing to be sold at K-Mart or tacky jewelry on QVC.

Posted: 9/21/04 at 3:22pmI had this conversation with a friend last night. I would definitly NOT want to be famous! I want to be a working actress that is paying her bills doing what she loves. My cousin is not even famous but since he is on a TV show he gets MOBBED everywhere he goes and I don't think I would like that too much. Especially when he has the kids with him. However there are perks like LOTS of FREE stuff and when you go to Disneyland they escort you through EVERY line so you NEVER have to wait!
