Yetta Schwartzman at the Duplex – the greatest show – EVER!
Oh, how I loves me some Yetta!
What a show she gave last night! It was the greatest ever! I mean ever! Any show anywhere at any time! The opening of “Porgy and Bess” or Verdi’s “Falstaff” cannot compare to last night!
Yetta started with a medley, “Losing My Mind” that segued into “South America, Take it away” – While on paper, that may look like it makes no sense musically, thematically or well, at all, but in Yetta’s hands, it was like magic and besides, it’s cabaret, so no one cares what you dump on the stage at any time!
She then did number after number of sheer utter joy! Her version of “If I can’t have you – I don’t want nobody, baby” will never be topped and the originality to present a version of “Bye, Bye Birdie’ in Czech, well, it was just too much…...and let’s not talk about the tears in my eyes when she belted at the top of her lungs, like Janis Joplin, “A Very Unusual Way” – Who knew you could make that song into a rocker! Well, Yetta, knew!!
I have loved her work for so long – and she really is my personal role model and hero and bestest friend – I don’t care if there were 6 people in the audience it was the greatest night Christopher Street has seen since..since…well, that riot thingy!!
Why she’s not in the Catskills, I will never know!
Rush – do not walk to see Yetta, she is only there for 1 more hour!
