Actually, this little book of postcards featuring sexist ads of yore has been out for a while, but its getting a spanking reissue!
You mean a WOMAN can open it?
I'd love to know what was in Kellogg's PEP!
Vitameatavegamin?
That spanking one is actually horrifying.
Almost as horrifying as watching some 70's game shows and seeing all the women who bought into the role that advertising sold them.
Those ads reek of acrid cigar smoke wafting around all-male ad agency conference rooms.
There's some not so subliminal messages going on there, too.
STFU!
Those ads are brilliantly hideous. They made me laugh and ponder.
I think the creepiest part is it wasn't that long ago.

And yet, I see these ads and wonder really how far women have come. The Equal Rights Amendment failed each time it was brought to national attention, reproductive rights continue to be eroded, a woman running for president engenders questions such as "How do we beat the bitch?" (and that was asked by a woman!) that are met with laughter and approval.
Has the women's movement of the 70s just completley petered out? Are most women content to still let men control and dominate them and their bodies, just in different, more sublte ways?
i thought those were hilarious, but i'm kinda messed up lol
Ah, those were the days!
I was watching an "I Love Lucy" marathon over the Thanksgiving holiday. I love that show. But I was freaked out by one of the jokes.
I wish I could remember the set-up. But Lucy was talking to Ethel about not looking good in some color or another. Ethel said something like "Well, have you told Ricky?" And obviously, Lucy was going to to have some s'plainin' to do, because her reply was "No. I don't look good in black and blue, either." Yikes.

Oh that show, classic as it is, is chock full of awful displays of misogyny. Lucy's fear that Ricky was gonna beat the sh*t out of her was always played for humor. I think knowing that Lucille Ball was really a shrewd businesswoman helps to mitigate that, but there are plenty of jokes on that show that are cringe-worthy, even when you put it in historical context.

The biggest mysogyny was that Lucy Ricardo was a great performer, while Ricky's show at the Tropicana sucked!

Ok, now that's just hot.
>Ok, now that's just hot.
Well, it would be, if the guys all looked like the dude in sonofmamamiasam's avatar, Santa hats and all. And weren't full of misdirected misogynistic rage. Then it'd be totally hot.
...I'm trying really hard to "have a sense of humor" and "lighten up" about these ads, but it's really, really a struggle for me, they really piss me off.
Speaking of I LOVE LUCY, there was an episode where Ricky would spank Lucy over his knee as a way to "discipline" her.

Sure, Cartman, as long as you work and pay all the bills while I stay home and play housewife.

Yeah, they're awful. They're funny in that "look at what used to pass for advertising!" sense, but all those ads are essentially violent and demeaning.
Are you ogling me ny? Shouldn't you be getting knocked up or something?
Oh. . it's Roseanne.
