I think it's about the first hour that shows the killings, and they made me cringe, but they didn't gross me out. So no, it's not really gory.
I saw this the Monday after it opened. I had just met Jake (at Spring Awakening) a few days earlier while he was in NYC promoting Zodiac, so I figured the least I could do was see the movie as soon as possible. I saw the matinee and I was literally the only person in the theater. That was dumb. I was convinced that any minute I was going to be stabbed. Or that one of the teenagers working the concession was going to run in and scream "boo!" (I scare easy)
I liked the movie. I was glad that it was more about how the case affected the newspaper employees and police instead of being a slasher flick. I think the performances drive the movie more than anything else. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much without Jake, Mark, and Robert. Sadly, I also don't think they were Oscar-worthy performances- but still compelling nonetheless.
