when the strike is over, i think a swell idea for a new sitcom would be to take the basic idea and some plots straight from the classic series "The Golden Girls" and just make all the women over into gay men.
the show has a definite gay sensibility and would work pretty much verbatim with gay men in place of the girls.
think about it:
dorothy - tony - the bitter, divorced high school teacher living with an elderly mother and pestered by a cheating, older ex-spouse
blanche - buck - the sexually overt southern belle
rose - george - the dim-witted, but kind midwesterner
and some of the episodes that would translate fairly well are:
Season 1, Episode 5: The Triangle
Original Air Date: 19 October 1985
When Dorothy's doctor boyfriend makes a pass at Blanche, their friendship becomes threatened.
Season 1, Episode 15: In a Bed of Rose's
Original Air Date: 11 January 1986
After Rose's boyfriend Al dies in her bed, she believes his death was her fault; her late husband had died under similar circumstances.
Season 1, Episode 21: Flu Attack
Original Air Date: 1 March 1986
Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche all come down with the flu at the same time
Season 2, Episode 6: Big Daddy's Little Lady
Original Air Date: 15 November 1986
Blanche's father reveals that he is getting married. Meanwhile, Dorothy and Rose enter a songwriting contest.
Season 2, Episode 12: The Sisters
Original Air Date: 3 January 1987
Dorothy invites Sophia's sister Angela to visit, not knowing that the two of them hate each other.
Season 3, Episode 3: Bringing Up Baby
Original Air Date: 3 October 1987
Rose's uncle Hingeblotter dies and leaves Baby, his 29-year-old prize-winning pig, to her. The other girls object until they learn about the cash they will receive if they take care of the animal until it dies.
i'd watch it, wouldnt you?
Why not just watch reruns of Frasier?
Or reruns of The Golden Girls?
Or Sex and the City?
It was done as an off-broadway show and if I remember correctly the producers were sued and forced to close it.
