Gotham, I still can't believe that Pataki beat Cuomo. I was in NYC for that election.
I will admit I voted for Giuliani at the time and he did wonders for the city, but his political grandstanding this time around really turned me off.

Hmm. Outside of that smoking ban (which I personally don't mind, actually), I don't think Bloomberg is too bad. And he managed to actually get things done on education.
Your post was extremely thoughtful, Papa, I really hope you are right.
so do i, borstal, so do i.

I would be amazed and gratified if the Republican party moved from being so controlled by reactionary and fundamentalist forces and back to being a genuinely constructive party. A lot of the Republicans I call friends are people who have a lot of the same principles as I do, even if we disagree on how to accomplish them. They aren't well-represented by the Bush Administration.
It is nice to see a level headed response from a Republican today. For that, you continue to have my respect, papa.
However, Bush will not be getting my respect, nor my support unless he is able to produce civil unions with 100% of the same benefits as marriage. This is the only way that he can reach across the aisle to me.
Even then, it will not change the fact that he has sent 1000+ soldiers and thousands of Iraqis to their deaths for oil. It will not change the fact that over half this country has finally elected their idiot. And that the majority of this country is filled with bigots.
Marc, it's interesting that you said, "What scares me the most is I've always had a optimistic outlook towards our country and that has been replaced with not only a very deep hatred for Bush but also a hatred for 52% of the American people." and then said, "Right now Bush and hate has firm control."
As far as I am concerned, when you can only hate someone when you don't understand them. Hatred comes from a lack of understanding. While you could say "I don't understand why Bush does the things he does" what you would really mean is you don't agree with his beliefs because your own beliefs backed up by fact don't match. Hatred is at the level of mere disagreement and not informed disagreement. It would be better to say you "passionately disagree" with Bush's philosophy and those who voted for him than to say you hate him and the people who voted for them. Hatred only begets more hatred and that is something this country needs a heck of a lot less of.
In my life I've been mugged because I was gay. I've been fired because I was gay. I watched as it seemed that things were changing, and gays and lesbians would get some of the same rights given everyone else. I was optimistic about the US.
Then I watched a campaign of hate towards us, the only purpose was to win the presidency, and it worked. Now all we have to look forward to is the same civil rights slowly taken away. The population of the USA showed itself as the hatemongers they are, and I now realize that hate is the only thing that works.
To say that hate is the only way is to give up in my opinion. What about the Ghandis and Martin Luther King Jr. of the world? You can give up but I refuse to believe that peaceful resistance is impossible.
Peaceful resistance doesn't work. They declared war, now my philosophy is "no prisoners"
If that's how you truly feel, then it's too late. I hope your emotions are just running high because of the election. Otherwise, you've already lost.
