a warning to anyone who shops at petco

we just got him form the vet with my bird... he told us something interesting.
i don't know if this is just local or not, but many vets in the area are not allowing pets from petco to be brought into their clinics.
pets from petco are often bought from breeders that sell the animals at very cheep prices, and you get what you pay for... he told me alot of the birds they saw form petco had giardia, a parasite that, when found in birds, can only come from other birds at an aviary, and alot of contagious beak and feather disease.
he told me that no animal from petco, not just bird, are allowed to be brought into alot of vet clinics unless they are old patients who have been there before... no new patients.
this was the only pet we ever bought at petco, and is definatly going to be the last.
i wanted to give everyone fair warning before you buy a pet at petco, or have one that has never been to the vet before, to not be surprised if they will not see the animal...
if you're planning on buying a pet, please do not buy it from petco... while there are some pet stores that do take good care of the pets and buy them from reliable sources, a breeder or rescue shelter with a vet clinic is always the best place to get them from.

finny was doing fine for a long time, and now all of a sudden she's on three medcines... please keep an eye on him, but i hope he continues to be ok and happy.

most pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills, and i refuse to support that.
if you are getting a dog or cat and can't afford a breeder, please consiter the humane society or another animal shelter with a vet clinic, since those animals are always evaluated by a vet and treated for anything they may have before they are put out for adoption.
before we got our dog (who's 13 now and very healthy) she was treated before she was available for adoption... she was a bit skinny when we got her, but otherwise in very good health, consitering where she had come from (she was found thrown over a fence near the new york/connecticut line with her brother and sister, very dehydtared, very malnuritioued, with cuts and a fractured leg)

Wow, I didn't know that about PetSmart.

When my apartment contract expires next August, I hope to get an apartment and get a puppy - I have a friend who works at the Humane Society who is already showing me good matches. Puppies...

elphaba, so do i, but i wasn't aware of any parakeet rescue places near me. i know of a few bird rescues, but they are all large exotic birds that i could never afford to properly take care of (although, little finny racked up quite a vet bill...)

all of ours except the bird, the fish, and the babies were rescues... i don't think there are any betta rescues anywere... lol...

pugs are sweet... my neighbor has one.

there actually are small bird rescues, but they tend to be in places where parakeets live in the wild, very warm places.

haha! a friend of ours used to have a three-legged dog named blue... if anyone ever asked why the dog only had three leg (she was hit by a car) he would say "well... she's just too good a dog to eat all at once!"
