Posted: 1/5/11 at 1:14amThe problem with an acting compETItion is that acting is much more difficult (in general, but especially to the public) to judge than singing and dancing. While a contestant can dance clumsily or hit an off-note, there are not as many "mistakes" one can make while acting. Opinions would also vary more- an honest performance to one spectator might come off as fake to another.

There have been a few -- the two I can recall, were both for soap operas.
For the most part, the dynamic simply isn't there.

LOL, I was like "What is a compation?"
Anyway, wasn't there a show on a number of years ago that included singing, dancing, and acting?

Stockard, you must be thinking of Star Search, which did not have acting.
And I don't think the OP meant shows like the Grease or Legally Blond reality shows, where actors competed for specific roles. I think he meant like a competition that involves monologues, scenes, cold readings etc. to find America's best actor.

Oh, but STAR SEARCH did have an acting competition. It's how Lara Flynn Boyle first got noticed. It really didn't work. They might have dumped the acting competition in later years.
The only acting reality show I can think of was THE STARLET, which was butt-clenchingly bad and seen by virtually no one. It had Viveca Fox and Faye Dunaway on the panel.

Posted: 1/5/11 at 12:24pmThere was also one to cast a horror movie that ran on cable a while back. I think many of he contestants mis-read the casting notice and thought they were auditioning for a whore movie.

I remember Star Search included 2-person soap opera acting scenes for the first season or two and then dumped it. It was dull and didn't amount to much more than the "spokesperson" contest.
Joe - I remember that show! Didn't it have a couple of little-known reality people in it? I remember they all had to live in a horror house and act out scenarios. I think I gave up after 2 episodes.

Posted: 1/5/11 at 12:38pmThe most recent version of Star Search definitely didn't have acting- I used to watch it every week because my Junior High music teacher was a frequent winner. How exactly did it work when Boyle was on?

I remember the Horror Movie one, too! (didn't watch it, but I remember it..)
I also remember two different filmmaking shows: Greenlight (I think) was one, and I can't think of the title of the other that I actually found really interesting.

I guess that must be what I am remembering.

Yes, the original Star Search certainly did have an acting competition in addition to the "spokesmodel" competition. Contestants acted out the same scenes and were judged. It was pretty painful.
There was also two or three seasons of "The Next Soap Star" which was more along the lines of "American Idol" where there was a big search and 10 or so contestants move into a house and act out soap scenes. It was pretty entertaining. The winner got a years contract with one of the ABC soaps.

Carrie Fisher and Gary Marshall were judges on "On the Lot".
Are you thinking of "Project Greenlight"? I don't believe that was a competition show but rather a film festival type contest. Filmmakers would submit their films and the winner would be aired on television. They did make a documentary about it though.

Posted: 1/6/11 at 12:52pmThere was also that show where America got to pick the next Sandy and Danny to star on B'way in a revival of "Grease".

Wasn't there one a few years ago with Faye Dunaway as a judge?
America's Next Starlet or something?
