has anyone read this book? it's the story of two male penguins in new york's central park zoo named roy and silo. they have been living as a couple since about 1998.
they did everything as a couple - walked together, sang to each other, bowed to each other and swam together. they soon realized they didn't have something other penguin couples had though, a baby.
the zookeeper had an idea and put an egg that needed to be cared for in their nest. the egg hatched, and tango makes three!
it is such a sweet, charming and TRUE story.
Okay, CM needs to trot to B&N and get this book.
My heart was melted by the story when I read it online, I imagine the book would probably reduce me to tears.
I think those were the penguins that tried to hatch a stone first. So the penguin keeper gave them the fertilized egg of a negligent female penguin to hatch. It was a very cool story.
OMG I haven't read it but I want it NOW!!!

Oh, RobbO's description is incomplete. Roy and Silo actually wanted an egg so much that they nurtured a rock at one point. That was when the nice zookeepers gave them Tango-To-Be.
It makes me all warm and fuzzy.
insomniak, i wanted to leave some details for the reader to discover. i didn't want to tell the whole story - just give broad strokes.
i picked it up this weekend at giovanni's room in philly. it is a classic and i intend to read it to my nieces.
Aww that book sounds so cute!
oh, and the penguins are still at the central park zoo if you want to see them in person!
it makes me sad to report that roy and silo are no longer a couple. a few months back a new female penguin moved into the penguin exhibit and silo split from his partner of six years to shack up with the new penguin.
well, at least we have encouraging news that tango - the daughter that roy and silo raised together has been seen shacking up with another female penguin.
even with this encouraging news, however, the parting of roy and silo makes me very sad.
Tango is a product of a broken home...
Scrappy is a homewrecking whore.
And look. The stick-in-the-ass morons in James Dobson's army of darkness have wasted no time in gloating.

I actually thought the Chinstrap colony getting blocked by the ice flow at the beginning of the year was more tragic - tens of thousands of chicks lost.
But, like the Oscars, what happens at the beginning of the year gets forgotten
also, the story is so personal in this case. rather than try to comprehend the loss of thousands of unknown penguins, i can so identify with roy just "staring blankly" at the wall as a result of heartache.

Robbo - you talk like a film critic.
A gay one
Poor Roy.
