Posted: 3/15/06 at 8:04pmI really would expect someone like her not to stoop to those levels. Granted, I don't really know much about her, but... I read that and just wondered how someone who created something so beautiful could write that, too. I understand that she's hurt by this, but I would've expected it to be handled in a much classier way.

Posted: 3/15/06 at 8:06pmI think the article wouldn't have been bad at all if she hadn't referred to CRASH as TRASH.
#6re: and you thought the fans were pissed?
Posted: 3/15/06 at 8:08pmMy sentiments exactly, Munk. Unless there was some dirty campaigning from the "Crash" camp that we don't know about, it seems utterly tasteless and spoiled-sport to degrade it (and the people who worked on it) just because it won. That's where Annie lost me.

It's like the real world version of the LaChiusa-Shaiman debate!
Let's wait for the writers of CRASH to erroneously respond on the IMDb message boards!
(Except LaChiusa had a point in his article...)
#8re: and you thought the fans were pissed?
Posted: 3/15/06 at 8:15pmShe's not just insulting Crash, though, Munk. She's trashing the Academy, Hollywood in general, and the other winners (including Crash, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Three 6 Mafia). Just because the movie she was affiliated with wasn't all that successful, it doesn't mean that the other winners weren't deserving and that her (biased) opinion is the only one that matters.

That's true. Seemed very uncharacteristic of her.
(Maybe if she channeled all that intense emotion in her article and put it into her stories, Brokeback would've...oh, never mind.)

Well, I DO have to agree with her about the 3 6 Mafia.
She just came across as very chidlish and whiney. IF she had taken out the personal attacks, it would have been okay.

#13re: and you thought the fans were pissed?
Posted: 3/15/06 at 8:32pmThat's because CRASH is homophobic.

Crash was a slice of life in LA just like BBM was a slice of life .
Found Crash quiet good & thought it a shade better than BBM which was a shade better than Goodnight. To name call something because your movie did not win is self defeating. Had BBM won, I would have been just as happy or the same holds true for Goodnight
BBM lost & it is sad but 4 of 5 had to lose. This is not the end of the world

Posted: 3/15/06 at 9:19pmCongratulations, Ms. Proulx. After reading that whiny, self-indulgent and outright mean editorial, I now see you as a whiny, childish bitch, regardless of what you're really like. Good job.

I'm guessing you are all reacting this way because you believe she feels the movie is her own work, but I wonder if that's the case. I don't know what her informal input was, but her only credit was as the writer of the short story. I see this as possibly outrage more on behalf of the people who made the movie than on her own behalf.
I suppose it helps that I think the Awards are taken way too seriously myself. They make me embarrassed to be in the film industry.

My, I never realized how lacking in class this lady was until reading that "article." I had nothing but respect for her until I read that piece.
Good job, Annie! You've undoubtedly turned off myriad readers who actually used to admire your work!
#23re: and you thought the fans were pissed?
Posted: 3/15/06 at 9:45pmIt doesn't matter at all to me whether her outrage is for herself or for more involved members of the creative team behind the film. The problem is that she's acting like a whiny, petulant child who is upset about not things not turning out the way she wanted them to. It doesn't matter whether she had any involvement at all in the film; even if a fan who had nothing to do with the movie wrote that, it would still bother me. She's completely disregarding the talent of anyone not associated with BBM. And I don't think her article makes the Academy Awards look bad, it only makes her look bad.
