anyone sick of parents?

I just graduated high school, and granted, that doesn't mean I'm automatically all grown up or whatever, but damn..do they ever let go?

They just grounded me for expressing my opinion, and took away my car, cell phone, and freedom.

Does anyone else feel this? Or was I just blessed with these awesome parents?

re: anyone sick of parents?

Wow - your parents gave you a cell phone and a car? I'd rethink those horrible people if I were you ...
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: anyone sick of parents?

Expressing your opinion? Now that could mean all kinds of things, so I'm going to withold my sympathy for now. Besides, what your parents giveth, they have every right to take away, unless you paid for that car and phone yourself.

re: anyone sick of parents?

I totally agree. I've been grounded for much less than even just expressing my opinion. At this point, I wish I would be grounded for something as outrageous as that. If I hear, "When you're living in MY house..." one more time I might scream. Okay, I will scream. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! There. But it didn't help. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was "our house?" No. Oh well.

You're lucky your 18. As soon as I turn that I am SO out of here. Me and my friends are gonna put together a band and make it big. You have to start somewhere, right?

Ya know what I wish? I wish we had a separate board space here that was just all our own to talk about parents, homework and peer pressure. Wouldn't that be amazing?

re: anyone sick of parents?

But Namo, if everybody in the board was an adult of your obviously superior level of sophistication, who would you pick fights with when you're bored?

Oh, wait. You have your straw men for that. Nevermind!

re: anyone sick of parents?

Well, there's a lot more to it obviously that I posted. I sound really ungrateful for everything, but let me assure you, I'm not. Their care for me goes all the way back to them adopting me. I would not be here if not for them.

To sum up things for some of you. They pay for everything for me. Trust me, I know I'm spoiled. I'll admit it.

The small, condensed story of what happened is that at orientation for college, they told everyone that parents cannot receive any information about their children unless their children signed a waiver. After orientation, my mother informed me that I was signing it. I got mad.

Rents argument: Since they are supporting me, they should be allowed information. It's common courtesy.

My response: I agree with their following statement. (Although I will add that I have a full scholarship, paying for everything, and will be getting a part time job so they will not be helping much.) My reply is, why do they have to call someone up to know my grades? Why can they just not ask me what is going on and how I'm doing?

Now, I'm on restriction until I can "figure out what I did wrong because obviously, I don't know."

re: anyone sick of parents?

I hate to tell you, but you don't stop being their child at age 18. I know someone who's parents don't even care to know how he's doing, and he's in the Marines. Be lucky yours want to make sure you're doing OK at college.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Since they are not paying for school, they do not have the right, since you are over the age of 18 you should be responsible for your grades etc. They have to realize that parenting does indeed stop at a certain point.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Parenting may stop at a certin age, but being a parent does not. that's what I was trying to say. Sorry for any confussion.

re: anyone sick of parents?

If you've always told them your grades before, I don't see what the problem is. If there have been issues about report card disclosure before, that's another story.

re: anyone sick of parents?

You will always be a parent. However, parenting does stop concern should never, but parenting has to. That is just the way it is.

re: anyone sick of parents?

No they never go away, until one day when they are gone.....and trust me, you will wish to God that you took the time to know them better.

My parents are both in their 80's, and they are a pain in the ass, but I love them deeply, and cannot even think about them ever not being a part of my life.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Oh my god, they adopted you? Then who the hell are they to tell you what you can't do? I would so totally be out of there.

And Plum, I may have done totally good on the English PSAT's but I don't get what you're talking about. Maybe when I go into Pre-Law.

re: anyone sick of parents?

When my mother was alive I treated her like the devil. But I was also 14... Eh, now I regret it.

Anyway, my grandparents treated me like a baby when I lived with them. But once I left, I haven't looked back. It's your life. You're now an "adult". If they're not there to sign your checks, then they shouldn't have any say in what you do.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Honey, hang in there. It's not bad, at least you have their concern. Besides it is not easy being a parent.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Sweetie,

I moved out of the house on my 18th birthday, my parents had been divorced for years (I lived with my father) and STILL to this day, my Mother thinks she can tell me how to live my life, even though she's a miserable failure at hers (Hell, I'm the only relative she has that even barely speaks to her.)

It will never end, you just have to learn how to set some boundries.

Step 1: Move out.

re: anyone sick of parents?

You did good on the English PSATs, Namo? Really?

And if there were such a thing as pre-law, maybe I'd know what you were talking about. But alas, there isn't. I guess we'll have to remain puzzled by each other.

re: anyone sick of parents?

I did way good on the PSATs. English section only.

I'm rilly glad there are older people like Plum on these boards to demystify such complicated concepts as "parody" and to spell things out and make the connections like a slightly disappointed school marm. Miss Grundy of Riverdale High. That's my new image of our beloved Plum.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Never once hid my report card from them. I've made straight A's my entire life. They have no reason to worry about me in college. I'm strong-willed and I will make good grades. I have to if I want to keep my scholarship.

I understand what alot of you are saying. It's hard for you to understand the exact situation with the limited amount of information I have provided. There is a ton more that goes into this.

I just believe that positive reinforcement is a better way for us to get along. They complain that I like to keep everything from them about my life. I'm very personal when it comes to what I'm doing, feel, or believe. (Which I would like to add for everyone that would say something about that this is wrong- I have never done anything to abuse their trust. I tell them where I am, who's there, etc., and do nothing that parents would be concerned about.) But if I want to talk, I'll tell you. If I want to share, I will. This whole fiasco is not making me want to communicate with them any more.

I respect everyone's opinions as to my situation, and I cannot wait for the day that I have my own children. Maybe then I will see, but not now.

When people say that parenting stops, what are your opinions as to when?

re: anyone sick of parents?

*woosh*

That was the sound of a pop culture reference completely flying over my head, as those things tend to do. Nevermind, I'm sure it was a very witty and incisive comparison that would make me weep in humiliation if I understood it.

If you think I took your parody literally for even half a second, I'm a bit disappointed in you, Namo. What I took for reality was the part about separate boards. Or was it FindingNamo2 who so strongly advocated such a move? My memory's going in my old age.

re: anyone sick of parents?

Was it one of those scholarships where your parents had to disclose their personal information and what they've done with every nickle they've earned over that past five years?

re: anyone sick of parents?

Parenting stops when your child turns 18, you can make suggestions but the Parent has to let go. My son decided to go into the Navy on his `18th B'day, I did not want him to go, but it was his decision. Makes a child grow up too without the interference of thier parent. But a Parent should always be there.
