Damn, those mothereffers are crazy.
Why did there even need to be a center? Was it just a place to hang out or what? Couldn't everyone just use the general student union for that?
Ah ok, I just read that it is a resource center of sorts? I think that it's a good idea because LGBT people can have a place to feel comfortable and safe, but I do understand where other people are coming from that the funds may have been better spent with something that everyone benefits from. No matter what I say, I'm probably going to be accused of being a homophobe, but I promise you that is not the case. Again, it's a good idea, but really, not everyone is going to benefit from it. Although, I do understand that something like a new basketball court or something would also not benefit everyone. Perhaps they could have created another lounge, but not made it any sort of group specific, and upped the funding of LGBT counseling programs, or something of that nature.

Here's my response I posted. Should show up shortly.
"So when are my tax dollars going to open a Christian Student Center lounge? We are discriminated against much more in the media than gays and lesbians."
Okay, first things first, it is a complete LIE to say the Christians, especially in the United States, are discriminated against as much as Gays, Lesbians, Bi Sexual, and Transgendered individuals. YOu are not denied basic simple civil rights on a day to day basis. The Christian majority is the most narrow minded, controlling power in the US at the moment using hate speach and unproven myths to "prove" their hate filled agenda. The constitution clearly asks for a seperation between Church and State and therefore tax dollars should not be given for a Christian Lounge. And besides, last I checked, most of America is a Christian lounge. Perhpas the discrimination you think you are experiencing is because of your narrow mind not your religious preference. I think you'd find most of the glbt community would say they believed in God and are more frustrated with organized religion than religion itself.
"Gays and lesbians are allowed to live and work anywhere they want, while African Americans were lynched and beaten in the streets by throngs of people."
This is also a huge lie. Partners of GLBT individuals are frequently denied basic insurance benefits because of lack of state laws supporting civil and marriage unions for same sex partners. We also tend to stick to bigger cities out of fears of living in smaller communities where we have been, a simple google search will give you plenty of examples, lynched like many African American individuals before us. Since you probably won't do teh research, I'll give you a link to Matthew Shepard. A young gay male living in a small town who was beaten to death and hung on a fence to die because he was gay. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard
Provide me one example of a Christian being kicked out of their family because of their Christian beliefs. Provide me a clear, supported, actual example of a violent hate crime against a Christian. Are you afraid to walk at night because you're Christian? Are their any Christian hate words equivilant to the word Faggot. Have you ever have had a gun held to your head, as I did in college, because you were Christian. YOu choose to be a Christian, People do not choose to be gay. Wake up and smell the coffee.
Judas, it actually IS for the entire student body to use.
the books there range from textbooks about GLBT history that sociology and psychology majors can use for research projects, to books for siblings who are having a hard time understanding what's going on in their brother or sister's lives, to books for people in the process of coming out, etc.
most of the books there, the kids on campus who are out and open about their sexuality won't have much use for.
however, those kids that won't really benefit from it, will be working there in their free time, willing to listen to anyone who needs to talk.
