Hey all! I have a question that hopefully someone here can help me answer :) I am thinking of auditioning for ___ school's vocal performance major. Their audition guidelines require the following:
"1. Two art songs, or an art song and an aria (an accompanist will be provided or applicants may bring their own accompanist)."
What do they mean by "art songs?" Would anything musical theater be considered an "art song?" Thanks in advance for any insight!
No. Musical theater is not an art song. Some examples of art songs: Amarilli, caro mio ben, an die musik, die mainacht, the salley gardens, heart we will forget him.
An art song is classical. If you need any more suggestions let me know!

Yes, an art song is a classical (read: Baroque, Classical, or Romantic) song that is not from an opera, oratorio, etc. If you're familiar with the Schirmer's book of Italian Songs and Arias, those all count as art songs. If you're not, you should be.
My main piece of advice, though, is to ask your voice teacher.
Typically an art song is a made up of a lyrical poem that's been set to music, usually classical. =)
