There's not an easy way to explain this online, but for right now, just think of this. When you inhale to sing, your chest should not move. When you inhale, your stomach (not really your stomach, just that area on your body) will fill with air - it's just placing the air differently - that is your diaphragm. I do'nt know how to explain it online.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure out how to describe it, munku...

Liam, try putting one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach, kind of just below your belly button. Then breathe and keep the hand on your chest from moving.

Take a deep breath before you sing, trying to keep your chest from moving, and belt it out more from the diaphragm, the stomach area, instead of from just your throat. And stand up straight!

I agree with you all... make sure that when you take a breath in... you take a full breath. This breath should come from the near your bellybutton... and it should almost look like you are pushing your stomach out to take a breath. To practice it: trying laying on your stomach and taking breaths in. You should be taking air in from your stomach, because it's easier to breath in through your stomach area when you're laying down. Also try practicing when your hands lightly touching your stomach [not the psalms on your stomach, the edges of your hands on the stomch], this way you can tell when you are breathing correctly... because your hands should move outward.
Also, make sure that you are standing up straight. For this... you can try and make yourself feel two inches taller. Or you can go on your tipy-toes... and slowly come down on your heels, but have your heels barely touching the ground. "Posture is the key to life". Also... if you are sitting, make sure your back is straight, and don't slouch.
Hope this helps... kangaroo

Another way to tell if you're breathing correctly is to have someone stand behind you with their hands on your shoulders while you sing. Have them tell you if your shoulders rise at all. If they do rise, then you aren't breathing correctly!

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad
