Posted: 7/28/09 at 12:26amthe guys around midtown west are outrageously expensive. more dough to do altering than the clothing itself...anyone? thanks if you have any ideas (downtown, perhaps?)

Walk down Mott St. in Chinatown and right before the last couple blocks on the left hand (East) side of the street on the downtown corner there will be a women's clothing store with big rolls of Chinese brocade fabric and Chinese dresses they have made on mannequins in the window.
They'll do tailoring in there, just go in and ask, and their prices are the most reasonable I have found. They are pretty good but not fancy. They are fast, you can drop it off and walk around shopping and pick it up an hour later sometimes. I think they made buttonholes in there for me one time, too. People were asking $5 each and I think they did them for $1.
If you are down there, also off the East side of Mott is Bayard Street. Walk on the downtown side almost to the end, past Elizabeth St., and there is a bakery where they have the best baked pork buns for 80 cents and terrific fried fish sandwiches with lettuce and tomato for like $1.35. Walk all the way back and look in the glass case on your left. Girl's gotta eat while she shops.

So sorry to hear that.
Pilates can be very good for some lower back trouble. If you get a physical therapist, you might consider one who is also trained in pilates and has the equipment.
Hope you feel better soon.

LES has some good ones, too. There are a bunch right around Stanton and Orchard. I had a pair of tux pants done there for about three bucks. I can't remember the name of the place I used, but they did a good job.
No pork buns, though! There is a good vegetarian restaurant close by.

Calvin, thanks for the info....i lost a lot of wght. recently and need to "take in" some clothing (a lot). Do they do that?
NOM -Thanks for the reply. Actually I started at PAPT (Pilates 311 West 43rdSst - superb place, btw)) a coupla months ago but had to stop until further evaluation, 'cause things got worse somehow since....still waiting for that damned HMO to "approve" my "comeback" (soon). And, of course ya gotta have pork buns in chinatown, no matter what!
