clogged ears#0

Posted: 6/13/06 at 6:50pm

I went swimming today and my left ear got completely clogged - it doesn't hurt, but everything sounds very muffled through it.

Anyone know any good methods of fixing this aside from putting alcohol in? (I've tried that, it helped some, but it's still not totally better)...

Did you hold your nose and blow really hard? It should make your ears like pop.

Try chewing gum too.

Also, let water just drip in your ear for a few minutes. The shower or something like that...

It could be a build up of ear wax. If that's it go see your doctor.

Jump up and down with your head tilted so that which ever ear is clogged facing down.

Well, I'm glad he got away with it.

If it's water in your ear it should go away soon. If it's a buildup of wax, go see a doctor. I had that once when I was ill, and they have this tool that they use to squirt water in your ear. It breaks up the wax and flushes it out without hurting your eardrum. It's pretty gross, and I wouldn't try it on my own, but you definitely feel better after!

Just curious Elph, what's the danger with the alcohol? Because it's acidic?

my ear, nose, and throat specialist said to never do that. Alcohol is not intended for bodily orifices.........

Well, stood in the shower for twenty minutes with the water on the ear - that didn't really work. Every once in a while I can get like a vaccuum effect going wiht my hand over my ear and for a second it seems to clear up, but then clogs right back up again...anything in that?

Go to the drug store and get Murine Ear Drops. That alone should work.

You can also buy a little round rubber syringe for ears at your pharmacy to clean clogged ears. After you put the drops in you can gently squirt water in your ear canals with it and clear things out.

I keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet and first aid kit just in case.

Now I know why I love this board so much.

I found an ear cleaning kit I had from a couple of years ago that didn't work - and I now know why - I was doing it wrong. I didn't realize that you were supposed to just blast the hell out of your ear with it until suddenly your sink is full of gross things from your ear and your sink sounds really loud! Yes, it worked, and how wonderful to be able to hear again! (My students have a really big performance tomorrow night, so it would have been REALLY tough being backstage and not being able to hear them whispering at me when they needed something!)

So thank you everyone!!!

I shudder to think what else gets stuck in your ear if "little gross things" come out.....

and...one does not blast, one gently "irrigates"

It was all natural, I assure you. Then again, it WAS a public pool...

And blast, irrigate - whatever it was, it worked!

Thank you.
