As for the queens of the queens, I was talking about the young princesses. I think that Cheno, while she does have her idolizing girly fan club, qualifies for that position.

I have to say no to Cheno...I think she's good and all but she is not a legend. At least not yet. Like Cher, Bette, Judy, and so on. Have to say I saw Cher in concert two days ago, and she was amazing...And am going to see Bette's in a few months for the second time. She is kicking off the second leg of her tour in October.

Here's my two cents: They are all very openly gay-supportive. Judy was Hollywood's ugly duckling, everyone knew she was great, she just wasn't beautiful and so MGM didn't really know what to do with her, sort of what happens to many gay guys. While they may excell in whatever their job is, and be great friends, many employers, friends and family members don't quite know how to go about the whole "but he's gay" issue.

Also, Judy never really belonged anywhere, just like the gay men of the 40s and 50s, and so she sang to them and about them in a way. All on the same boat of not belonging, but always longing and hoping.

I don't want to go on about the rest, but this is the general idea.

The true gay icons (Judy, Cher, Barbara, Bette) were first idolized by the Stonewall generation. Madonna (my generations icon) simply doesn't resonate in the same way. You'd have to ask a gay man over 50, who lived through those times, what it's about.
