I don't know about Judy and Liza, but a lot of gay men I know love to be friends with the bitchiest women they can find. This may very well be what the people I know find appealing about Barbra.

Well in her case, I believe she is an Icon because from her beginning she always supported gay rights, always embraced and contributed to gay culture and was one of the first voices on the fight against AIDS !

I've always heard it was because the women that are gay icons have suffered much, just as gay men have suffered. These women are tough and have made so much of their lives. I think the fierceness and the glamour is what makes them gay icons.

However, I don't get all that. I just like their voices. It probable relates to an older generation. Young gay guys today aren't as likely to attach to these women. So what are today's gay icons? Porn stars?
