Your friend is an idiot- Music & drama have been linked since the earliest times. Greek plays integrated music & spoken word because they knew that music makes connections that mere words cannot. You might even consider Shakespeare's plays musicals without music- the dialog is written lyrically, in verse. You could make a better argument that all sorts of performances are musicals: Strip the music out of Jaws and tell me that the music is not a vital, important part of the story.
It is not by accident that operas have endured for hundreds of years.
