not since the heady days of 1997 has the dow been so low.
thank goodness the scold in chief is out there daily telling people who horrible it is and how much worse it's going to get and refusing to tell us just exactly what they plan to do about it.
any bets on what his speech tonight's gonna do? drive it down to 5k?
personally i think it's part of a plan to cripple the economy on the way to declaring martial law and installing themselves as rulers for life.
Dunno.
But all the years of speculation and greed, coupled with lack of regulation is really coming back to bite us in the behind. It is like the housing market with derivatives...
I am hoping that he will give some confidence to the American people about shovel-ready projects starting to create jobs and provide a mechanism to get things moving again. That is step one. Though my investments are getting killed, I don't need the money now, so I can give him some time. I do believe they modified the RMD rules so people are not forced to liquidate investments now.
I have a feeling that he is going to say that both sides need to stop playing politics and make sure that their constituents are heard and solutions are created.
The psychology is just as important as the technicals, so I am hoping that he starts working on the psychology, because until people believe things can and will turnaround, they wont. He needs to be more positive. I think Bill Clinton actually gave him some good advice a few days ago about how to shape the message to America.
But again, that is just me.
i don't think he wants them to turn around. i think that he knows that once things have completely collapsed that a terrified american populace will grant him powers beyond his wildest dreams. then when he has taken total control can he re-make america as the country he thinks it should be. i think they do not believe that americans are frightened enough to cede any semblance of freedom. so they must scare them more.
Well, I recognize that he has not repudiated each and every Bush policy, but I am pretty confident that he is not going to expand the Executive Branch via a Unitary Executive theory.
So, keep on trying to bait those Obama supporters. Someone will bite so you can play...
FYI, there is a move to legalize Marijuana in California - if you legalize it and tax it, it would help our financial mess tremendously. Apparently, it is California's largest cash crop.
I am not a big fan of the MJ, but have no problem with this. I have been advocating it for a while.

"Someone will bite so you can play..."
You really shouldn't say things like that to papa.
Actually, that particular sentence was written with specific intent and my own visuals.
...i am pretty confident that he is not going to expand the executive branch via a unitary executive theory.
yep, he would never do anything like taking something like the census - which just determines representation - and hand it to a political crony. nor would he engage in appointing "czars" who answer only to him - and who don't have to face any silly hearings - to formulate policy. and i am sure he would not hew to bush administration policies on renditions, wiretapping, prisoners' rights, etc. but yeah, they stopped using the term unitary executive so it's completely different now.
of course, it might just be the views of neo-cons and republicans.
y'know, like glenn greenwald
The Census is really part of the Department of Commerce, which is headed by a Presidential appointment.
That is a red herring.
And, part of me thinks he is walking a fine line of trying to respect what Bush did while President in some instances.
Also, he is taking his time in figuring out how to solve a very complex problem. Let's see what he does in the first six month-year before we start assuming he is George Bush redux.
but they are taking it away from the commerce dept. and giving it to rahm.
It is all part of the Executive, so I guess I understand the argument that it could be subject to personal politics (which it already is), but it seems to me that Congress was complaining because they claimed to have input in the process. It is reporting to same branch of government and eventually up to Rahm.
If Rahm plays politics with the Census data, then he should be called for any shenanigans. You are assuming ill-will or intent based upon the past 8 years of experience with no evidence to support your assumptions.

I'm taking a screen shot of the number. After O's Rape of the Union address tonight, I think it will slide another 1000.
it's like the moment on now with vladimir illych moyers when he was talking with a union official about their plan to band the secret ballot and allow union thugs to intimidate workers and punish those who do not toe the line. moyers said, "now some have expressed concern that these rules would allow for intimidation of workers." the shocked union offical responded, "but we would never do that."
so your argument basically is, it's ok when our side does it. that's fine. i can respect that. i can't respect any arguments made on so-called principles anymore since they only are operastive when the gop is in power. but i can respect your position that it's ok when our side does it.
goth, that's a low even for you. wtf is wrong with you? i hope that someone sees it and not only deletes the post but suspends you for vulgar stupidity.

I use the term rape the way The Fantasticks uses it -- meaning to be carried away by force.
But it's nice to know that you have turned into a flaming liberal.
No, that is not my argument.
My argument is that there is no evidence that Obama is going to politicize the census. If his administration will be wrong for doing so.
There have been issue historically of the census over counting some and undercounting others. All I want is a fair count.
If Obama uses this as a political tool, then he needs to be called out on it. If, however, it is non partisan, and people are accurately counted, then I will have no objection.
And Papa, if they do play politics with the census, you are free to pull up this thread and say "I told you so." and I will say "yes you did."

"But it's nice to know that you have turned into a flaming liberal."
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Well, he is a little flaming . . .
i was thinking of tying this to your earlier thread, q, but thought, "why sully a perfectly good flames shooting out of someone's rump thread with thoughts of goth?"
but yeah, only liberals take offense to the use of rape to make a bad joke.
"I use the term rape the way The Fantasticks uses it -- meaning to be carried away by force."
Oh gosh...that makes ever so much more sense.
So it's not the "Rape of the Union Address" it's the "Carried Away by Force of the Union Address"
Thanks for the clarification.
i usually ignore it, jag, but sometimes ya just can't.
and the morning after sees the market down 150 following the greatest speech in american history by the most wonderful human being ever to draw breath, our own bammy hussein.
Not surprising.
He wants to regulate the markets, and wants there to be accountability. That tends to send the market down - you know, as opposed to just throwing money at a problem and hoping that it fixes itself.
There is going to have to be a seismic shift in thinking on Wall Street, with compensation coming more in line with senior executives rather than robber-barons. I have no problem with merit-based compensation - I do have a problem with merit-assumed compensation. We have been living with the latter, and now need the former.
there'll be a seismic shift all right. it'll be the sound of investors looking outside the united states.
I have to generally disagree, because the same issues here have happened in other markets, and many of the issues we are dealing with are also on the table in other international markets.
The markets are too interdependent to not have a cascading effect.
