yawper,
I think a key difference between that Depression and the coming one is that during the former most of the securities were held by wealthy individuals and homes were owned by folks that could actually afford them. The Dust Bowl was a double whammy. In the run up to the Great Depression less than half the population owned homes. And those that bought didn't take out 30-yr mortgages either.
Presently, the bulk of securities are held and managed by institutional investors doing the bidding of individuals nearly oblivious to dealing of their agents. I need not recount the sub-prime mortgage debacle. We are now very much an entitlement nation with many folks thinking of themselves as rich or well on the path. You know, the "everybody works for me" kind of folks.
I interact with a number of college students who are already bummed upon discovering that some folks who work in a "plant" actually earn more than their anticipated starting salary. One of them is my neighbor's daughter, a college senior, who is distraught over a recent job offer that would pay her less than her dad would who operates several mobile taco stands that partially put her simple azz through college. And daddy paid for her personal trainer at the gym with his "greasy taco money" while she was in college.
My grandma was a very simple woman who used to say "your grandpa and me survived the depression because po' folks know how to live po'". Generation PlayStation is not so well-equipped to deal with Doomsday.
The thought of having to enter a war to get us out of the present jam is unthinkable on several levels. First, not even silver-tongued Obama could sell us on the idea. Second, we no longer produce any sh*t of value to a war effort other than armament. And finally, we just don't have the fight in us of past generations.
My boss is fond of suggesting that 911 was a joke compared to the disaster that would ensue were we to experience a nationwide Blackberry outage for a week. Oh, the horror!
Yesterday, the Dow Jones closed at 8,504.08. That represents a 3.54% increase since the day before Obama took office. Over the same time period, the S&P is up 7.82% and the NASDAQ is up 14.58%.
come back to me when he gets it back to where it was the day before he was elected and the freefall began in earnest as the market shed wealth in anticipation of public companies being seized and their profits re-distributed like a banana republic writ large.
At least 30 minutes before the close.
And, it already opened above the closing on November 4th.

THANK YOU! I started to bump this thread this morning and got sidetracked. I AM SURE Papa would have done it eventually- he always admits his mistakes.
Wait did I say always? That's not it- what's the word I am thinking of? Never! That's the word. NEVER.
actually, i don't remember much of them. besides, i know that there's always someone who holds my words under their pillow muttering nightly, "just you wait..."
but i am glad that you two are such fans of the market.
I think the market is not a good indicator of overall health of the economy. But, it plays a psychological role in any perceived recovery.
And, I would not be surprised to see a correction downwards after it broke 10,000.
I was just following up on what you specifically asked for. Since you seemed so very concerned with the downward trend, I thought this might be some good news for you.

My 401K has a 30% return for 2009. I'm just glad because my alternate plan for retirement is to go live with Papa and his brood.

and the rich get richer. mb, your celebration of the raping of the underclass by the wealthy via the stock market makes me weep with pity for your soulless cravenosity.
you trumpet the market to score political points while millions suffer without jobs or hope during the darkest (pun intended) period of the republic.
i don't know how you sleep at night!
Wow...that only took 12 minutes...I was figuring about a half hour or so.
well, i wanted to comment on the internet thread this morning on the train, but couldn't make wireless bww work on my blackberry. so i signed in when i got to work and lo and behold there was my thread. i actually forgot what this thread was about until i opened it and saw your callous attack on working people. for shame, sir!
I love it when papa channels Ed Schultz.
i'm going to f***ing torch this place! f***ers!!!
OT on the OT - I despise Ed Schultz. Remote controls were created just because of people like him. Big old yelling buffoon.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of Schultz either.
"the official madbrian hates po' folk thread"
But I love the poor

Dow up almost 50% since Obama took office.
I imagine Fox News will only report on this if they can open with, "Despite the Obama Administration...".
