This is great and I am so happy for the advances they are making in medicine...I can only hope that stem cell research will help people with Spinal cord injuries (my sister among those).
However, I must confess that I first thought that her AFTER picture was her BEFORE picture...still, she looks MUCH MUCH BETTER.

Meanwhile back in the 'burgh, UPMC docs just performed the first double hand transplant on a man who'd lost his hand and feet to a bacterial infection. They're also using a new therapy aimed at reducing dependence on anti-rejection meds.
Amazing things are happening.
Two hands are better than none, brother.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:19pmThey say she has a lot more surgery ahead of her to help with the size and shape of her face. They'll remove extra skin flaps and puffiness that gives her face a boxy shape. They can't do this until her nerves and blood vessels are all completely healed and operating at 100%. I think it's one of the most fabulous things I've ever seen!
A click for life.

i thought the same thing when i saw her at first, geez, that's it? but it makes sense that such a procedure is only the first step in a long process for her.
like she said, "i got me my nose!"

On "Ripley's Believe it or Not" the T.V. show (I believe that is what it was).
There was this guy who had something wrong with his face and a most of it was gone and he had this detactable, prostectic face. It looked very real (more real that hers...for now). But then again, it wasn't his...it comes off, and hers is real. So I guess, there are pros and cons to both.

You can really see the difference in photo 4 of the original link (it's a profile pic).
Bless her heart.

I know what you're referring to, MTVMANN. His name was Mark Tatum and he had flesh-eating disease. He died, like, 4 years ago.

wow, I wish I hadn't seen that.
I was just telling someone that despite my love for horror flicks (and the gorier the better) I can't look at these pics when I know they're real.

That is the guy.
I didn't know he died though, rest in piece to him.
I had forgotten that it was on his eyes and top of face.

You know what else is nice, Addy? His wife stuck by him through thick and thin. He seemed to be very grateful about that on the show. Sorry to post another graphic picture, but I think it speaks volumes.

I was reading someone's blog on the matter and how she would rather be dead than be so deformed and this woman who survived a drunk-driving accident was also mentioned. You may or may not find the extent of her injuries shocking. This video made me want to cry, though, and I am going to send it to my cousin since she's in SADD.
On another note, props to that man's wife for sticking by him. Real love is refreshing, though the circumstance in which it was proven is not always fun to think about.
