Posted: 7/1/04 at 12:15pmWell I can't say "ever", but Miss Carpenter would be right up there on that list. And also Mrs. Celine Dion. Gorgeous voices!

Posted: 7/1/04 at 12:24pmI don't know if I could possibly choose a "greatest singer, ever", but I agree with MattG. about Karen Carpenter. She had perfect pitch. What a voice!

Hard to compare different styles and venues, but some that come to mind:
Maria Callas
Kiri TeKanawa
k.d. lang
Patsy Cline
Barbara Cook
Pavarotti
Streisand

Posted: 7/1/04 at 11:03pmI have to agree with Kiri Te Kanawa. In her prime she had a buttery richness to her voice. She was stunning in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and OTELLO at the Met.

Male in theater: Brent Barrett
Newest young talent: John Tags
Female: I love Kristin Chenowith's range. I have seen her in so many wonderful performances my favorites were at City Center.
She sang a song with a broadway belt and then a few minutes later sang a high soprano. She has a great range.
She really impresses me.
And the girl has SPUNK.
Sutton and Kerry Butler have the best belts.

I gotta go with Wing on this one.
So maybe she doesn't have perfect pitch, but the girl's got spirit! Gotta hand it to her there.
