have you hugged your stage manager today?

Stage managers work so damn hard and often don't get any love for it. So go to rehearsal and hug your stage manager. Tell him or her that you recognize all of their hard work and appreciate them for it.

My whole cast hates me because I won't let them talk in the wings or sit on the set peices. DUH!!! I shouldn't have to tell them these things!

Anyway, I think it's time for a stage manager appreciation day to be enacted.
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

Gypsy, I feel your pain. Stage management is the most difficult job in the theater.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Now that I come to think of it... we don't have one. But I HAVE hugged my assisstant director who acts as a stage manager. Does that count?

*nods*

Please, we're not Nazis, we're just doing our job when we tell you to shut up backstage. We do love you all! *hugs for all fellow SMs and ATDs who act as SMs.*

“Life is a tedious entertainment desperately in need of a little stage managing.”

I have used that quote for 20 years - does anyone know the source??

I am an actor but I have SM'd a few shows and it is VERY hard work.

That said SOME stage managers are real pains.

I'm assistant directing YAGMCB. We have no stage manager. You know what that means... double duty for Ashley.

BTW- I want that needlepointed on a pillow.

re: have you hugged your stage manager today?

omg finally a thread i can appreciate! lol.... well i'm a SM as well and just closed my university's production of Carousel on Sunday so I give lots and lots of hugs and sympathy out to my fellow SMs on here. Yes its TONS of work and STRESS but we all love it and wouldnt be doing it if we didnt right guys? So all you actors out there appreciate your stage managers its true they work their ass off for you and when anything goes wrong its their fault so thats why we want you to be quiet backstage. (i also want my crew to listen to me, but thats another story)

re: have you hugged your stage manager today?

i loved stage managing and my casts were always fantastic to me, even though i was usually much younger than most of the rest of the cast. the last time i stage managed, i was acting in the play as well (which i don't think i would ever do again, but that's besides the point), and having a wonderful supporting cast made it all okay!

so...yay for stage managers! and for casts that appreciate them!

re: have you hugged your stage manager today?

Am I crazy in that I really love stage management? Maybe it's just my crazy misplaced maternal instincts combined with the fact that I'm a complete control freak, but I really love SMing. SUCH a high when you can get it all to go well. re: have you hugged your stage manager today?

I actually did hug my SM today. Lovely.
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."
