I'm not usually a stickler with spelling but, unless you are talking about the Bering strait, please use the correct spelling.

STRAIGHT

I would like to see RTF try to convince people that her statements are justified. But he/she ran off.

Alright, I'm going to "come out", so to speak, for the first time here in this thread. I used to be homophobic. I didn't like gay people; I thought it was "gross." It didn't have anything to do with religion, I was young, in middle school. I can say, for a fact that the reason most people are against homosexuality (including those who use religion) is because they're afraid and/or ignorant. That's why I was the way I was. It wasn't something I was brought up with, my mother tried her hardest to reason with me and teach me that it wasn't ok to hate, but it didn't do much good. I was scared and fear can be a powerful tool. I was a tomboy all my life, and still am in a way, and I was terribly insecure in my middle school years. I didn't understand you that couldn't just become gay. I thought that people might think that I was gay if I didn't say "ew" or "gross" or use derogatory names or statements like "that's gay!" Also, I thought I might even become gay, so I built up such a block in my mind.
Then, as I got into high school and I became more secure with myself, I just let all of that go, rather suddenly. I realized that I had been stupid and immature. As my horizons expanded I finally figured out that sexuality doesn't define the entire person. I realized that they were just normal people who wanted to love and be happy. I grew up in a small town, so unfortunately those around never quite fully realized that. They couldn't understand why a straight person like me would want to help fight for gay rights. It was quite a turn around. I'm now in college and currently working hard to help Fair Wisconsin fight the proposed "gay marriage ban" here in WI.

That's why I think of this whole anti-gay movement as a very middle school mentality. Because they are afraid and don't understand, they want to pass laws and bans that totally go against the principles our nation was founded upon. Hell, it was the same with me. It baffled my poor mother, since I was always so pro animal and human rights, the homophobic thing just didn't fit. People do stupid, stupid things when they feel afraid.

In a country based upon freedom liberty and the separation of church and state, there is absolutely no excuse for any of these gay marriage bans. If churches want to be biznatches and keep preaching hate under the guise of Christian values, then that's their business, we can just ignore them. But even those who use religion as an argument against homosexuality have a flawed argument. "I'm on God's side." You'd be surprised just how much God has, apparently, changed his/her mind throughout history. Back before our country formed and we started the whole democracy thing, there was a solid belief that God had intended for people to be ruled by Kings. They were picked by the Holy Father himself to lead the people. Now, it's all about "God bless America." There are plenty more examples, but this post is long enough.

MLE-
I think that is a wonderful post! I think it's the mentality of younger people to think that if they think it's ok, they will have a label of it and be made fun of. Often they are scared they are going to "catch" it.

I applaud you for such a great post. re: homosexuality

Q-
Thanks, I appreciate that. I've never told any body I've met after middle school about that, it's embarrassing for me, but if it's helps to enlighten even a little bit I'm glad to share.
