I prefer the word nakedness to nudity. Cuz it's funnier.

My question is, in productions of Hair you have seen, who gets nudey and when?

I'm auditioning for a regional production of Hair that will have a big budget, knowing this theater. And I'm just wondering if the entire cast gets nude at any point and there's no hope for someone who's not comfortable with nudity to be cast.

I've only seen one production of Hair and it was crummy community theater so there was little to no nudity. I'd like to get a better perspective on more professional productions' levels of nudity.

many thanks!

Get comfortable.

I have seen one production and been involved with another. In both productions, everyone in the cast gets nude at the end of act one except for Claude. Which is as it should be if the production is being true to the piece. So, yeah, get comfortable.

I was in it twice, both times the cast had the option to disrobe or not. Some people did it every single performance (me!), and others didn't. Some didn't at all.

Priest, I'm pretty sure that not everyone in the original cast got naked. I know I've specifically heard that about Diane Keaton. I don't know if there was anyone else.

ETA: I had had my onstage nudity cherry popped before I did the show, so it was no biggie. Honestly, after the first time you're naked on a strange in a theatre full of strangers you won't even think about it.

Aren't you just the little (or big?) exhibitionist?

Tomato, tomahto, I guess. I don't have a particularly great body, except in certain niche circles, but I've never cared if people saw me naked.

And I'd say I was an average exhibitionist.

Being comfortable in your own skin is important.

Get comfortable. Do it. You won't regret it. What's the worse that can happen? Doesn't matter if you have a "hot" body or not.

ehhhh ****. i can't do it. ah well, the show would have wrecked me vocally anyway. my classical voice teacher/surrogate grandmother would have killed me - both for belting and for gettin nudey.

edit - oh i'm not worried about not looking good naked. i'm one of the minority - americans who are naturally thin. i'm just very conservative in some areas, some areas not, and nudity is one area where I won't go. some day there may be some instances when i really believe in a piece and find nudity essential, but i don't care enough about Hair. I don't like seeing thin people naked, personally.

And props to you for solving this existential dilemma in 40 minutes.

If you'd had a bunch of responses saying "don't do it," would you have done it?

Why don't you like seeing thin people naked?

I tend to like a little meat on the bones.

The 30th anniversary production was a college show that the original producers brought to Chicago. Even though it was a non-equity, college age production each and every one did full nudity (and it was brighter than most I'd seen previously). I worked on a promotion for the show with the cast and had a hard time looking some of them in the eye after I saw the show.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what I find attractive. My scope is vast, and I'm a pretty much a walking contradiction.

But this is about Hair. The nudity is like ten seconds long. It's no big effin deal.

To keep it on the subject... when nude- do you prefer HAIR or no HAIR?

I saw coin purses and tea bags.

You'll have to post pictures!

"I don't like seeing thin people naked, personally."

We've all got our preferences.

"And props to you for solving this existential dilemma in 40 minutes."

I don't think I solved it. Just voiced the choice I made for myself.

"If you'd had a bunch of responses saying "don't do it," would you have done it?"

Done what? Been nude for Hair? The theater is way too prestigious to cast me. This whole thread is a moot point. I'd never be cast.

That's no way to go into an audition...

This is a weird thread. I don't understand it.

You said in the first post that you were auditioning for this show.

I'd show up to the audition naked.

If that doesn't convince them you want the part, I don't know what else would.

Sorry for being confusing. I'm being a little cynical.

The overwhelming likelihood of requiring all cast members to be nude will probably be enough to discourage me from even auditioning. There are many other factors not in my favor in terms of getting cast with this company. Being unwilling to be nude for a role that requires it is the straw that breaks the camel's back and makes the audition almost entirely a waste of time.

You should just kill yourself now, then.

What are those? Like needing talent?

Yep. You spelled that out clearly there. No contradiction whatsoever. What you WANTED was everyone to say OH MARY! you are so talented they will let you wear your MuuMuu while everyone is naked around you because they are LUCKY to have you!

Are you familiar with the concept of SOUR GRAPES?

Sour tiny grapes that no one wants to see anyway?

And esp. if you're thin. Don't show your grapes if you're thin.
