For all of you MP3 player owners out there, I was just wondering which of these is better, because I'm about to buy one of them... 30 GB iPod or 30 GB Dell.
If you have one of them, do you like it? Would you reccommend getting it? Does it work well (I keep hearing how people's iPod's are always breaking)... any information you could provide would really help me make a decision. Gracias!
I have a 30 gig DellDJ (my DellPod!) and I've only recently had a minor problem w/ it...well, not even w/ the DellPod, but more with the software. Long story short, the Musicmatch software was deleted from my computer, and when I reinstalled it, it was all funky. But Dell was really great when I called them. He couldn't help me w/ the software, but he gave me the Musicmatch contact info, and (since I'm the anti-college student, and don't really download music from the net) talked me through downloading music on-line and then ripping my CDs to mp3 and putting them onto my DellPod w/o the software.
Anyway, long story short, I've had mine since April, and it's been just ducky. I got mine on sale, and it was cheaper than the iPod mini, it's got a sexy leather case that is so much snazzier than those iPod skins...yeah. I'm not sure how much the 30 gig iPods are going for, but I know they're more than the Dell, so that was pretty much the deciding factor for me. Everyone I know that has an iPod has had some problem (of varying degrees of severity) w/ theirs. And the "genius" service line (or whatever it's called) at the Apple store has always been ridiculously long every time I've gone in there w/ someone else.
If you've got any other questions about the Dell, let me know. I've got over 200 albums on there now, and I've only used about half of the space (though w/ shows and stuff, a lot of my albums are pushing the 20+ track, 80 minute limit).
neither, my Toshiba gigabeat 40 is just fine, thanks.....
Love my Dell! GREAT battery life on the 20 gig model (got it a year and half ago before the redesign)..I have run it for over 14 hours on one charge.
Chose the DJ over the IPOD for battery life as well as DJ taking Window's media files (At the time IPODS did not, not sure uf Apple changed that)
I HATE the musicmatch software...go with Media Player or Real player....
I have an iPod. I love it -- but I have an older version, and I know the newer ones seem to be more prone to battery problems and things.
I have two ipods....i think they're just great, always have worked well for me.
Is this question even serious! Ipods! The new 60 (or 30) GB video ipod is AMAZING! I love watching desperate housewives (downloadable from itunes for $1.99) on the subway on my way to school.
Just to toss this out there as well...I don't know where you're living/if this'd be an issue, TheActr, but it seems that iPods are also a lot more of a threat to be stolen. Of course this could be remedied by switching the earbuds, but who wants to have their shiny pink iPod mini w/ boring headphones. If you're living in NYC (or any other major city), I don't think you'd often be able to take advantage of the video feature that Stephy was talking about. If you're going home on the subway, or hanging out in the park, whipping out your iPod video and watching it in the car/on the bench is just begging to get it ripped off. Just a thought.
i agree that watch your i-pod and therefore having it out in plain sight is going to cause more thefts

Wonderful thread! I've been wondering about this, too. I'm a big Dell fan, and have sort of been turned off the iPods by the amount of "iPod help!! WHAT'S WRONG?!" threads on here. I have a Dell computer, which had the MusicMatch software already installed when I got it. Somehow, I've managed to screw it up... I must have deleted a part of it or something. Whatever. I mean, I love Media Player, so I wasn't too broken up about it. I'm wonderfing if I'll have problems with the software if I were to get a "DellPod" (love it, Mabel, hehe). Can I use Media Player instead? I'm a pro at that program!
Mabel, can I ask where you got yours? On sale sounds awfully nice, after looking at the prices they are now. And I'd like to be able to afford a sexy leather case, too!
I got mine from Dell's website. They had some sort of promotion, and then my parents had some sort of 10% off discount code from where they work. Basically, w/ the fancy leather case, and two sets of headphones (earbuds and another sound reduction fancy set of headphones), s/h, etc. it still cost less than an iPod mini.
I downloaded most of my CDs onto the DellPod (got the name from a friend of mine who also has one
) w/ the Musicmatch software that came w/ it on my parents computer at home before leaving for my summer job. I have a Dell desktop, and that was packed away, so I didn't really download anything on my own PC until I got back to school. I didn't really have any problems w/ Musicmatch, other than an occasional zapping out where it would say that it couldn't locate the portable device plug in, and I'd have to close the program out and restart. Strange. Anyway, at school, on my PC, something funky happened and Musicmatch was royally screwed up. Basically, now I've uninstalled Musicmatch, and I'm just using WMP, which has been fine, thus far. I just download everything/convert it to mp3 from my CDs, and then copy and paste the tracks directly into my music library on the DellPod. It's pretty easy.
And yeah...I've noticed an awful lot of "HELP! My iPod!?!?"-type threads lately. And I've seen a lot of people saying that they've gone through several iPods. I guess it's great if Apple has a service plan that allows so many free replacements, etc, but it just seems like a huge hassle to me. Granted, I've only had my DellPod since April, but hopefully these past few months that have been reletively problem free are going to bode well for a long, happy, healthy life for my DellPod!!!

You dont need to use music match for Dell, I use the Dell Dj Explorer and put em on through there, tho I must admit im on my 6th mp3 player ...
Thanks for the replies... I'm thinking about the getting the 30 gig Dellpod (
) because the Dell store near me has it on sale for $269. I just really need something to compile all my albums on because I'm so tired of lugging cd's around. It will be nice to have all my cast recordings compiled in one place.
Another question... do either the iPod or Dell DJ have any type of car adapter that will play your music through the car speakers?
I know iPod has adaptors that you can use in your car. Since I don't have a car, I never really looked into it w/ the DellPod, but I would tend to think they would. I do have an adaptor thing for speakers which is nice (especially considering I downloaded most of my CDs on a different computer).

i bought a refurbished 20 GB 4th generation iPod from the apple website. it works well, but the battery doesnt last long, less than what it says it should last.
20GB Creative Zen Touch. Amazing bettery life and sound. Haven't had any problem with it. And it's even cheaper than the mini ipod.

I have an iPod. Had it for a little over a year.... my only complaint is that Ive had problems with the right earbud shorting out. No matter, Apple sends me a new pair. Other than that, my iPod has worked wonderfully. I could get hours and hours of playtime on one charge, though shamefully I've never actually timed it so I cant give you an exact estimation.
Frankly, do whatever moves ya. I love my iPod and wouldn't trade it for any other MP3 player type device....
Also, please remember that just because you see a lot of Help threads on this site about iPods doesnt mean there are a LOT of problems with the iPod. If you think about the percentage of help me with my iPod questions here vs the number of iPods sold, in the grande scheme of things it's just like any other new/popular product.
