iPod vs. Zen Creative
#25re: iPod vs. Zen Creative
Posted: 6/18/07 at 3:13pmI've had 2 iPods, one for two years which worked fantastically (until I dropped it in the shower...oops) and the latest one I've had for about a year and I have no complains. It's a black Video iPod and it's extremely durable (I put it through hell and it still works like it's brand new). You also can't beat the battery. Most of the time I don't have time to charge it fully and it still lasts for days. I don't know how well the other brands work because I've never felt the need to get a different mp3 player. The iPod fulfills all my needs.

Folkyboy--I really don't think the Zen is the poor man's iPod, seeing as how they run the same prices, per GB.
One of my other concerns with the iPod is the controls--whenever I've used other peoples, I've had alot of trouble working the touch controls.
I really don't care about the trends, I care about what's going to work better and last longer. The trendiness of iPods is part of what kept me from getting one for so long!
The Archos sounds great (and I will check into it more), but actually sounds like it does more than what I need right now!
Anyway, thanks for all of your help!

Zen's have touch controls too, and it's a bit weird at first but you'll get used to them eventually. If you're that concerned about it though gigabeats only have buttons.
Another thing that I like about the Zens and my gigabeat is that you're not forced to use iTunes. You can use programs like Napster and Yahoo where you can pay one monthly price and download as many songs as you want instead of having to pay 99 cents per song.

I have a Zen Creative and I've never had a problem with it. The battery life is great. Just to be safe for about $20 bucks I recently ordered a spare battery in case I need it in the future. Here's a link to the battery.

iPod all the way. My iPod just died -- after 3.5 years. I'll get a new one in a couple weeks.
Zens and stuff just wish they were as cool as iPod.
As for Archos? I just want an mp3 player, I don't need TV and video and YouTube on the subway.

i decided to switch to the tiny iPod shuffle (speaking of poor) because i kept BREAKING my regular iPods. once i had a seizure in the subway station (i'm epileptic) and it cracked to all hell once i came to. another time, i sat my fat a$$ down on it when it was in my back pocket and oops! there she goes...
i like the little clippy thing because it was CHEAP and it's almost impossible to break. (though i haven't tried showering with it anytime soon)

Go for the Zen. I have one and its lasted me over 2 years! I have dropped it down flights of stairs and it didnt break as well as dropping it several times. The battery life is great as well!! I havent noticed a drop in quality since I got it. The one problem Ive had with it was like 6months into owning a Zen,it stopped shutting down so I sent it in and they gave me a new one with more GB. I thought the service was great! I had an iPod before this and I dropped it once and it broke. Not durable and the battery isnt that wonderful either. (yeah im a klutz...)
Hope this helps!!

Posted: 6/20/07 at 10:38amCan you get a replacement battery for iPods that you can replace yourself? I had heard that with iPod, if you need a new battery, you have to send it in to be serviced and it's really expensive for the repair (or replacement). Maybe I was misinformed, though. Whatever I end up getting, I want to make sure that it's going to last. I feel like when spending that much money on something, it better last more than a couple of years! Of course, I'm someone who will keep using the same computers and same cell phones as long as possible!

I don't know about iPods, but I know that I couldn't do that on my old Zen Sleek. It could be different with the newer Zens though. On my gigabeat there are a few small screws on it and from what I've read online it doesn't seem too difficult to change its battery.
Also, if you have some time, you should poke around this site.

Posted: 7/27/07 at 5:09pmI have another question about the whole iPod vs. Zen Creative thing (obviously I still haven't decided). For the Zen Creative users out there: have you had any trouble finding accessories (speakers, arm band for working out, radio tuner for car, etc.) for your mp3 player? I know there are a ton of things made to be compatible with iPod, but there don't seem to be as many for the Zens. Thanks!

Posted: 7/27/07 at 5:22pmIt is a little harder to find Non-IPODY stuff. i found a radio tuner no prob. havent really looked for the other things you mention, since i dont workout and i just hook up my zen to speakers i already have via the headphone jack.
