Posted: 1/10/06 at 3:20pmI've never been cast as the witch, but I've been in 2 productions of Into the Woods. Advice I have for you doesn't just go for into the woods, really for any character you're playing. But especially for such a crazy character like the witch, you can't limit yourself anything. You have to take risks with your acting choices. Don't be afraid to be out there. One of the best compliments a director can give you is to 'take it down'. Being too big is 100% better than being too little in the choices you make. So have fun with it!!!! and congrats!

i played little red, last year. it's a fantastic show. probably one of my alltime favorites. but isabella2 is right on, pronounciation is key. especially for the witch. her songs are killer. (i.e. prologue)
congratulations, break a leg!

Sing it more like Bernadette Peters and less like Vanessa Williams.
Congratulations!

haha i agree. when i first listened to vanessa williams and didn't know who she was, i imagined her as a really old and fat wrinkled white woman. haha.
but you shouldn't have to copy anyone. make it your own. do what feels right to you and don't be afraid to lsiten or watch any other versions of what has already been done.

Posted: 1/14/06 at 4:38pmWICKEDcool19 okay so yesterday was our first rehersal for INto the Woods. And we havent started the show casting etc yet, because my director is rewriting a lot of it, music, script, some characters to fit what we have cause like theres 4 guys ones just in 6th grade in both the musical theater class I&II so like one guys the wolf and a prince, another is going to be the baker and jack, and another a prince and possibly the old man. but the majority of our class are females so he's doing that. so it should be interesting. Ill be sure to post once i kno the casting, which he isnt annoucing til after we get through doing One Day More from Les Mis...its suppose to help us come together as an ensamble! so theres my little update

Okay, so this is slightly off-topic but it still has to do with into the woods. Yesterday I had my audition at Marymount Manhattan and in my audition group this kid did a monologue from into the woods. First of all you can't do monologues from musicals and second of all he took "hello, little girl" and turned it into a monologue. This basically consisted of him speaking the lyrics and looking rather idiotic. It wasn't even funny, I felt mortified for the kid. (Oh, yeah and he also sang defying gravity. enough said.)
I really hope to God he's not reading this because then I'd feel worse. But I honestly felt so bad for the kid because he had no idea what he was doing.

Yeah, I was just kinding from the comment above, but yeah make it your own. I'm just saying that I thought that Bernadette had the better voice than Vanessa(though I like her :), so you obvious want to be like the better one.
Here is a thought, I have the Into the Woods DVD and I have seen other productions of it. With the Witch, I like how Bernadette Peters didn't go too far over-the-top with her witch character voice. In Some of the local productions that I've seen the witches had these annoying stereotypical witch voices. That may be fine, but I just like Bernadette's voice better. Not to say that you shouldn't become a witch, but the voice is one thing that I thought of. Some may think differently, and that's okay.

okay, HOLD THE F-ING PHONE...
stylinbohemian...your director is REWRITING SOME OF THE MUSIC!??!?!?!? This is Sondheim! You can't rewrite Sondheim! The man is quite possibly the greatest living American composer. Wow...just...wow.
