1. I, for one, have no idea what you're talking about re: board members on the verge of chasing you through the village like they did Frankenstein's Monster.

2. Even if I did, I don't think I'd get quite this upset over messages on a message board.

3. My career is in intellectual property law, and you're absolutely correct. So that should give you some solace.

It is the "policy" of this board and most public forums to avoid any crossover of what would be deemed theft or not when it comes to intellectual property. There is a blanket copywright on all materials posted here - and usually on any other site. Posting a full article - or majority of one from any place to here or someones post from here somwhere else *is* a violation of the terms of service.

While there may be no hard and steadfast rule as to "how much" is too much - a good rule of thumb is a a few sentences.

Your logic regarding taking money away from the NYT, etc are not exactly valid because their care costs for their paper - their "facts" - their "intellectual property". Making their content available in it's entirety somewhere else can easily take away from revenue. Not so much from readers - but more likely ADVERTISERS who are paying rates based on clicks on their site, or impressions, etc.

That is one BIG reason this site does NOT furnish articles, but rather links to the source material.


All that being said - no one should really be berating you about a lengthy post. If someone has concern, please notify either Rob or myself and we will handle the matter according to the policies set forth on this site.

And you misunderstnd Fair Use laws. Fair Use laws are for objects, i.e. actual videos, newspapers or magazines which basically say if you 'have' something physical you have a right to give it away, show it to other people or whatever. It's not the same as linking to a copyrighted website. There absolutely are revenue/financial issues with an internet story. Internet Stories generate revenue the same way TV shows do -- through ad rates which are generated by amount of hits to a particular site. When you don't link to a story or give the information away you're reducing the amount of hits to the actual article, thus potentially damaging the money taken in by the publishers of the article. You're stealing the article and giving it to people who aren't paying for it. (Whether or not the 'fact' is owned is completely irrelevant. The STORY is copywritten.)

Not that you're reading any of these 'facts' either.

Bronte, first of all, as I explained in my PM to you, and you still seem to miss my point, is that the ELVIS MUSICAL is what I call "CUT and Paste SCORE" not your original post. I then responded to someone else's question to the legality of pasting an entire article in a post (as opposed to a link to that article) as a way to get around any legal problems it may cause for Rob. It was not a personal attack, and I was not the first one to mention it, I was only making a suggestion based on someone else's response.

Secondly, not everyone reads every post. I did not read the Bierko thread, because it did not really intrest me, therefore it is presumptious to assume that I should have suggested this on that thread and you took this as a personal attack.

I feel you are over reacting and being bit paranoid and am sorry you are not going to be part of this board because of that.

I suggest you take a deep breath, re-read the offending posts and get over it. You do not want to leave this board, I can tell, but if you take everything so seriously and personally, you will only be more and more frustrated.

Please, reconsider and accept my apology if I hurt your feelings. It was not my intention.
