This is completely random, and not meant to offend anyone, but does anyone else get nervous now when you see (or hear) a low-flying plane? I've been living in Chicago for about 3 years now and I know these planes are just coming into O'Hare to land but hearing/seeing them out my window (a multi-story apartment building) still makes me nervous sometimes.
Well, I live in Manhattan, so it makes sense to me. I don't notice so much, but my bf gets verrrrry tense when he sees them.
There's a beach on the Dutch side of the Island of St Martin so close to the airport that people have to hold down their beach blankets when the planes land.
There's also a beach bar there and people get drunk and feel the jet draft.

Good grief, that would freak me out! Not so much in connection to 9/11, but just from the standpoint of feeling helpless next to such size and power!
San Diego's airport is tucked in right near the downtown area, and it can still jar me to glance up and see a huge jet looking like it's flying straight into the heart of the downtown high-rises.
I LOVE flying into San Diego....and enjoyed it for the 8 years I lived there.
BUT....I HATE when it gets really hot here, as the planes descend quicker, and once right after we moved here a plane landed really low and I swear it almost touched our roof.
So I called the airport and complained, and talked to a very nice guy who said he'd look into it. (The plane had no markings and was a large jet).
Within 15 minutes he called back and explained it was John Travoltas plane.....
I politely told him, I didn't care if it was the plane carrying the Pope, and that to please tell Mr. Travolta to watch it!
OMG, remind me never to go to that beach! That would totally freak me out!

Believe it or not, people study the airline schedules and go to the beach on purpose.

That's insane! Those pictures almost look photoshopped or something. Freaky (and also like 30% cool, lol)
LOL!
I just showed that video to my 5 year old and he totally wants to go there.

We've now watched like 5 of these videos!
Woah. No thanks!
Just so you know--there are about 2 dozen beaches around the edge of St Martin--the planes fly ONLY over that one, on the Dutch side.
Over on the French side, there are unspoiled beached that are completely peaceful, like Baie Rouge:

WoW!
I have lived near the Ft. Lauderdale airport for 5 years now. When I moved here, the planes seemed to be extraordinarily low. Now, I've gotten used to them.
The first 18 years of my life, I lived in PA, an hour from the Philly airport. So, the planes weren't all that low. However, I was home for Thanksgiving a couple years ago and there was a plane so close that I felt my house vibrate.
When driving to the airport, there have been planes so close I was sure they were going to land on the top of my car.
It's like that some places near O'Hare too on the interstate. Crazy!
My dad was driving up 395 in Virginia on 9/11 and the plane that crashed into the Pentagon flew right over him, and he was like "whoa, that plane is low"
Scary.
I have been in the car passing the area where the planes land at LaGuardia. If the car has the sunroof open it can be kinda scary considering that they are low flying over cars on the Grand Central.
It was weird when I first started going to school. I'm at the University of Rochester, which is about five minutes from the Rochester airport, so it was a bit of an adjustment.
