re: my computer keeps freezing up

Apparently one of the things it blocks are Windows updates... I think I'll be wanting those.

Curses.

Any other ideas as to how I could fix my constanly-freezing browser?

Thanks so much to all those who answered... I think Firefox/Mozilla sounds nifty, but too risky.

EDIT- captain, why do you dislike it? And thanks, KMF. Still hesitant, though. I want my updates.

Although I won't get into the this one sucks and the other one blows debate.

You can easily go back and forth between Firefox/Mozilla and IE. Each one will prompt you to be the default browser but you can choose which one you want and have both loaded at the same time - it's (FF/Moz) just another program running on your computer. There are advantagous to both. It is perhaps easier to setup multiple users with FF/Moz without having to force a log off so everyone who shares the computer can have their own bookmarks/favourites.

Some sites still display better with IE and some banks etc insist on IE to do transactions. I use both everyday

FF doesn't block wondows update. MS insists that you use IE to get windows updates. I use both at the same time and have never had trouble getting windows updates.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

Thanks a ton, Kansas. So I can (just clarifying, sorry to sound like an echo) install Firefox without forcing anyone else on this computer to use it, keep IE, use IE and Firefox and get my updates.

Which do you reccomend as a default? And do you have to open IE on a daily basis just to allow the updates to get through? How does this work?

ETA- what is this 'MS' that insists on IE?

re: my computer keeps freezing up

MS=Microsoft
MS Windows, IE and windows update are so intertwined that to have windows update work you must use IE.

At work I use IE - corporate standard.
At home I use Mozilla - my preference but will use IE when the need arises. As to windows update I don't let it automatically update. I download the updates when I want them to be installed and there usually aren't daily required ones anyways.

If others are using the computer I would probably leave IE as the default browser. It just means that any links from emails etc. will automatically launch IE instead of Mozilla. Probably easier to leave the computer configuration alone as much as possible in a shared environment.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

I got Firefox and I'm in love after only two minutes.

Thank you all.

One question, though- do I just open IE once a day or something to allow updates through?

re: my computer keeps freezing up

I'm using it now, and I've decided this tabbing business is far too complex for me to play with tonight.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

I'm glad you like it. :) And if you have Windows XP with SP2 and a standard update setup, you won't need to open IE to get updates. The alerts will come on their own, just as they always have.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

What's an SP2 standard update setup?

And this doesn't mess with Norton Antivirus, does it?

And seriously, this is the best thing that ever happened to my computer. It's so FAST. My internet used to be sluggish.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

Service Pack 2? It's a big update that came a while back; you should have it. And no, Firefox won't mess with Norton or any other security software. It's just a program like any other.

If you want to see if you have SP2, do the following: Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. In the "General" tab, it should say what version of Windows you're running, and the words "Service Pack 2" should appear. I'd be extremely surprised if you didn't have it.

It's time for Emcee and Firefox to become friends, I think.

Help! How do I set multiple homepages, like Allie said I could have?

re: my computer keeps freezing up

Anyone?

I went to tool and clicked "current pages" for home page, and it listed the three tabs I had. But now in one tab when I click "home," I get new tabs - duplicates of the ones I already had. That's annoying. Is that what's supposed to happen?

re: my computer keeps freezing up

When you hit "Home", it brings up your homepages in new tabs... and keeps the ones that you have open. Yes, that's supposed to happen. If you close your browser altogether and then open it again, your homepages will be the only tabs opened.

re: my computer keeps freezing up

But say I already have two of the three homepages open, and I hit home to get the third one to go home? I'll still get three brand-new pages instead of just sending that one home?

re: my computer keeps freezing up

Okay, you have three tabs: The first two are homepages, and the third is not. If you hit "Home", you will then have five tabs. Theyt will be the two homepages you already had opened, plus all three homepages again... GAH, hang on a sec, I'm going to do it and see...

re: my computer keeps freezing up

Okay: Tab 1: Sympatico. Tab 2: BWW. Tab 3: dell.ca. Sym. and BWW are homepages; dell is not. I hit "Home". Now I have:

Tab 1: Sympatico
Tab 2: BWW
Tab 3: Sympatico
Tab 4: BWW
Tab 5: University homepage.

It bumps them, but keeps the other ones... oh goodness, this shouldn't be THIS confusing!

re: my computer keeps freezing up

I love mozilla, been using it for a while now.

Then again, I had never heard about the tabs. I'm gonna have to figure them out...
