Transportation = $70 per month for an unlimited ride Metrocard (only in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, doesn't get you to NJ). The transit authority is whining that they still can't meet their bills, so you can expect it to be even more than that by the time you get here.
The YMCA is run like a hotel now, long term living there is not really an option.
I live just a few blocks from NYU. The only reason I can afford it is because I live in a rent stabilized apartment. The apartment next to me is for rent. It is a 1 bedroom (the bedroom is only big enough to fit a bed). I think the owner is asking $2200 a month.

Does anyone who gave advice in this thread, other than Gothampc, actually live in NYC?

Etoile, imagine that first post.
Generous, older gentleman with strong ties and connections to theater, willing to share his luxuious apartment with young male students coming to NYC. All expenses will paid in return for "odd jobs".
Oh yes, I can see it now.

That was eally very mild, Nina. Imagine the ones that want to include photos.
Guess clicking to more than one site a day can be just so overwhelming.

Wonder...
Have to disagree -- a good coach and instructors can do the same if not more -- I have a degree in FineArts/Musical Theater from an Ivy League school -- trust me, I learned more after that....

Posted: 8/13/04 at 5:03pmwell, u have private coaches while you major in musical theatre. i have a voice and acting coach. i don't just rely on my professors and my directors because most of the time they're just dumb lol

It's really what is most important to you. Three years ago, I gathered up my savings and was faced with a decision:
Move to NYC and survive maybe a month in a tiny hole with three other people while I pursue a job and acting career.
Move to Chicago and survive almost a year in a large apartment with one roommate in a nice neighborhood while a pursue a job and acting gigs.
Given my age and my low tolerence for BS, I chose Chicago and never regretted it. Now I have a great job, live in a high rise in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Chicago and can afford vacations in New York. I can do acting at my leisure, but I don't prefer to live the Bohemian lifestyle in order to do so.

Posted: 8/13/04 at 11:06pmIsn't there any Rooming Houses in NYC?....When I moved to Seattle for a year, I lived in a Rooming House....the room had a kitchenette and we all shared the bathroom and shower..It worked out fine...I paid 400 dollars a month....There must be something like this in NYC.....A year gives you time to get a job and think if you really want to live there....I left Seattle after a year and moved to the Oregon Coast with my boyfriend... So can anyone give me an idea of what rent is like in New York? What is the average? I'm thinking about going to NYU for grad school in English. How do students (especially NYU undergraduates living in Manhattan) do it? $2200/month is rediculous. Do all the students just live in the buroughs?
How expensive is rent in Astoria? I rather like the neighbourhood, so I wouldn't mind living there.
