So can anyone give me an idea of what rent is like in New York? What is the average? I'm thinking about going to NYU for grad school in English. How do students (especially NYU undergraduates living in Manhattan) do it? $2200/month is rediculous. Do all the students just live in the buroughs?

How expensive is rent in Astoria? I rather like the neighbourhood, so I wouldn't mind living there.

I'm in Harlem, in a (for Manhattan) gi-normous renovated 3 BR apt for $1650. Seriously, check Craigslist. You can find great places!!!

It's hot and it's monotonous. I want my glasses.

i have a one bedroom rent-stabilized apartment (that means cheap) two blocks from Central Park. re: new york living... I will happily die here. But it will cost you (not money!) if you want to know how i got it.
