ooh, try again with that subject line...
Great little essay on NY, NY.
When Good Directors Go Bad: New York, New York
They should do us a favor and release a disc with just the musical numbers.
I agree BigFat--the improvised dialogue is excruciating, and the musical numbers are gasp-inducingly great.

Why do they keep releasing "The 30th Anniversary Edition of a Movie That Totally Sucked?"

They just released this film a couple of years ago as part of a "Great Directors Series" which spotlighted Scorcese along with Raging Bull and Taxi Driver and now they're re-releasing it yeat again under a 30th Anniversary guise with new cover artwork. It's probably the same discs in new packaging. I can't imagine them unearthing anything new or relevant since the last release. I hate when studios unneccesarily double dip.

Well, I may be wrong. I just looked into it and it seems that this new edition is a 2-discer as opposed to the Special Edition released in 2005 which was only a 1 disc deal. I couldn't find anything specific about the contents though.
It blows my mind that people go on and on about how "great" movies like MAKING LOVE or GREASE 2 are but tear into something like this. Is it the Liza?

I for one don't think NEW YORK, NEW YORK is a bad film at all. I like it quite a lot as a matter of fact. I'm just surprised their re-releasing it yet again after a Special Edition which was issued just two years ago.
