okay...
so, i love RENT just as much as the next fan. i can probably be considered a "RENThead"; i've seen the show way too many times to count and i raid the lottery all the time and know all the words and whatever...BUT -

i don't sit in the theatre and sing along (ESPECIALLY out loud like it's my own performance time), or participate from my seat in the upper-body choreography during "la vie boheme" or scream and giggle and hyperventilate throughout the entire performance (i might get a little flushed during some key cary shields moments, but not outwardly)...

granted - the show has been ON FIRE lately and it evokes emotion from me too, but i'm sorry - the outward and very vocal displays of obsession during the show drive me nuts. i'm sorry if anyone reading this is one, but after last night, i had to vent.

okay, i'm done.

I got that- I had the same problem when I saw it. Okay, Katecab means that when she(I'm guessing you're a girl by your name, so sorry if I am wrong, lol) saw Rent, people were singing along (I'm guessing loudly) and moving their arms in time to the choreography. This is very distracting the actors and the audience, and it's just plain annoying. I hope I was right on that?

A most ingenious paradox.

That's how I read it too. I hate it when people sing along at shows. I recall sing-along-ers at Fiddler, Les Miz, RENT, and Aida. Arg!

yeah i understand and i totally agree. i feel like some people do it to show like: i'm cool because i know the words AND the choreography to these songs.

if you wanna show off, do it on your own time...it's time to watch the people on stage.

Just as bad are the people who go to the show and act completely jaded. The first time I saw it in New York, I won lotto and ended up sitting next to one of the well known RENTheads at the time. We were in the front row, and she sat in total silence the entire time (never clapped), eating pretzels and drinking soda.

I mean, why are you there if you're so over it?

yes, you all got it re: obsessive fans (a RENT thread) sorry if i wasn't clear...

i just get super annoyed by the people who make noise and sing along (loudly) and dance around during the show. i was there last night, and it drove me nuts.

See I just mouth the words, and usually the person sitting next to me doesn't notice. If I wanted to do a sing-along, I would just listen to my CD, I mouth the words but acknowledge the people on stage sing better than I do.

That bothers me, too. Maybe the fact that in person, I'm not so overt about my fandom has to do with my shyness, but it drives me insane... ESPECIALLY when I win the RENT lottery, because you know most of the people there are RENTheads/big fans, whatever. People also forget that the actors can see you when you're that close. Once, this girl squealed aloud EVERY SINGLE TIME Cary Shields even so much as ALMOST looked in her direction. And apparently, she "knows" him, too.

Yeah, it is really annoying when people do that...I mean I used to do stuff like that but I was 6 and obsessed with the little mermaid and oblivious to the people around me. I would sing my little heart out...6 year olds at movie theaters I can kind of except this from, but adults or young adults at least who act like this need to be escorted from the theater

But even still - that's a movie. There aren't live people in front of you who have eyes and ears. Have *some* tact, people.

Oooooh! Story time!
Ok so one time I was at the Phantom of the Opera. This lady was sitting in front of me, who had obviously seen the show many times. So she was singing along with all the songs. Loudly. So at the end of the first act we were like, "could you please, you know, not sing during the show?" and her, I guess, boyfriend was like, "you are just jealous because she has a better voice than you do." Ummmm.... yeah. And we were like, "No, we just came to see the actual actors perform the show. Not you." Lol. I hate people like that. Like, I didn't pay $50-$100 to hear someone in the audience sing all the songs.

no offense but i hate snobby rent heads. I love rent but one time when i won the lotto with my friend, this one person looked at us like we were crazy because we didn't know the cast or where we were sitting. okay done ranting lol.

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!
