I'm sure this has been recently discussed...if so, and you don't want to talk about it, then....don't. :)
My predictions/hopes:
The Passion of the Christ
The Phantom of the Opera
Finding Neverland
uuhh.....
Closer?
Eternal Sunshine?
.....dodge..
...........ball...?...
wow, can't think of that many great movies this year. Help me out.
Animation:
Shrek 2
The Incredibles
The Polar Express (winner)
Actor:
Johnny Depp - FN
Jamie Foxx - Ray (winner)
Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine
guy from closer that's not Jude Law...sorry
Jim Carrey again - Unfortunate Events? (I still thing his performance as the Grinch was snubbed)
Jim Caziel (sp?) - Passion

And it is Clive Owen.

Sorry, I haven't seen it and don't know much about it, I just know I've heard a lot of hype around his performance.
Please, Matt! Don't whoop my cyber-space ass!

Clive Owen is ever so dreamy. And I think the only one from that film who will get a nomination (and win) will be Natalie Portman. Even though I liked her performance better in GARDEN STATE, CLOSER is the kind of film that will get her the nod.
And for the last time on this board, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST will NOT be nominated for Best Picture. It was without a doubt, the worst film put out this year. It was Mel Gibson presents a Mel Gibson film starring a Mel Gibson hand picked cast and a Mel Gibson script to get some more Mel Gibson money. It was probably the most overblown BOOOOOOORING, needlessly gory (and don't even tell me a single person could shed that much blood and still be able to carry that huge cross, let alone even BREATHE) piece of self indulgent crap I've probably ever seen. And yes, that includes all of Kevin Costner's films.
And did you honestly just suggest DODGEBALL being nominated for Best Picture?
Oh, and THE POLAR EXPRESS won't be taking home the Animated Feature award, either. That will go to SHREK 2.

Ok, number one, OBVIOUSLY I was kidding with Dodgeball.
And I didn't mean to open personal views on the story of a movie...whether you believe The Passion could have happened like that or not, he was putting on screen what many do believe. Maybe it will get nominations, maybe not. I don't really know, but there are a lot of movies I don't like personally at all that I will not deny are well made movies, movies that you can really see how much it meant to the makers of it--no matter what happens with it, they do not care because they accomplished something very real to them.
Anyway, to each his own...lets keep the peace:)

I really hope THE INCREDIBLES takes home the award for Best Animated Feature. Shrek 2 was fun, but really just a rehash of the themes and narrative techniques of Shrek 1 (if you take away the particulars, they're essentially the same movie). The Polar Express received mixed reviews and wasn't that hot at the box office.
The Incredibles was a departure for Pixar and has really helped broaden what an animated picture can do. It's a much more mature fare, with heavier and more interesting themes than the other movies. Plus, the writing is a lot sharper and the characters much more developed. I hope it wins the award, because of all the CGI-animated movies, this one is the most accomplished.

Posted: 12/12/04 at 4:01pmI also really loved the Incredibles. It bothered me, though, that it wasn't funnier. I guess that is just because I ADORE Finding Nemo, and FN was so hilarious. I kind of thought PE would win because the animation is I guess somewhat new and dare I say revolutionary? With the way they computerized Tom Hanks and all. I didn't know it got mixed reviews...I thought it was the perfect still-believe-in-santa Christmas movie.

Posted: 12/12/04 at 6:32pmOkay- if the Academy is smart, they'll nominate Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence, which was MUCH better The Incredibles, Shrek 2, PE, et al. The animation (both computer and hand-drawn) was amazing, it has a deep plot, just all around outstanding. I can't see why they would choose to ignore this.

If Passion is nominated then I will lose faith in the Academy...not only was it entirely overdone, it was way too melodramatic, and like Matt_G said, self indulgent. Mel G just wanted to make this movie to show off what a "great" filmaker he really is, and you know what? he is "SOOOO GREAT" that he doesn't even need to compaign for his movie, it is that good. (please notice sarcasm) So Mel here is some advice...go buy that island, and never make another movie becuase I think you will outdo yourself trying to make Passion 2: Jesus Reloaded, More Blood and More Holy Water!
AND...Scene!
GO ETERNAL SUNSHINE!

Best Picture: "The Aviator". Saw it last week, and it is Martin Scorsese's best film. Terrific, entertaining, just a simply fantastic movie. Martin completely redeems himself after "Gangs of New York".
Best Actor: Jamie Foxx, "Ray". Jamie Foxx was not in this movie; Ray Charles was.
Best Animated Film: "The Incredibles". A sharp, funny, moving animated film. Darker than the other Pixar films, yes, but just as good.

I don't see why Passion of the Christ doesn't deserved to be nominated. Mel Gibson didn't do it to show how great he is, but he did it because he believed in his faith. He had to go through a lot of controversy to get through his film, and I thought it was very moving.
I think that it does deserve a nomination, but the actual chances of getting the Oscar? probably not... take into consideration all the movies coming out for xmas season
the aviator is my guess

Posted: 12/12/04 at 11:07pmI don't think Passion deserves to be nominated. Take out any religiosity, and what you have is a badly-made film. Despite the visual flourishes (which are sometimes rediculously and almsot hilariously over-the-top), the film lacks subtlety -- which could be said of all Gibson's films. This one in particular is the epitome of over-indulgence and self-aggrandization.
