parents

My parents are going through "problems" in their marriage right now. They both started seeing marriage counselors. It's been really hard for me and I'm not sure who to talk about it with since none of my friends are really objective and I don't want to see someone.

Has anyone been through this with their parents?

Yes, it's definitely not fun. I haven't really had anyone to talk to about it either, so I understand where you're coming from re: parents.

re: parents

Yes... my parents went through marriage counseling twice. In my opinion they should've divorced long ago because there were some SERIOUS issues in the past and there still are issues but they're still together. But don't worry, it's more normal than you think. And remember your parents are trying to find a solution and this is all for the best.
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

re: parents

I'm sorry to hear that. Yesterday my dad seemed really upset and I asked him why and he ended up crying, which he never does. That was a real shock to me. I spoke to my mom about it and she said that "she's not angry, and she still loves him, but they disagree about certain issues and it causes problems" These "problems" have been going on for about the past 6 months and it's extremely hard to deal with. I feel like my family isn't the same, and it hurts to see your parents in that state. My sister and brother don't notice because they're too young. I tried talking to my mom about it a few months ago and told her how I felt and neither of them have changed their behavior, which is why they probably started seeing counselors. I really hope they get through this because family is the most important thing to me and it depresses me that I don't even feel like my house is my home anymore. I hate being around them.

I'm sorry for typing all of this but I need to vent, respond if you'd like, or just ignore it.

*raises hand*

I didn't talk to anyone, which was bad. Sorry that I'm no help. (My parents are now divorced)

Maybe it would be helpful for you to go with them to a counseling session or talk to their counselor by yourself? Do you have a close friend or relative that you could talk to? My brother found comfort in talking to our cousin, partially because our cousin had witnessed our family dynamic and understood the situation.

re: parents

Atleast your parents love eachother. That's something.

My parents both hate eachother, and they badmouth eachother to me and tell me how they made a mistake. My mom tells me all my dad's flaws. And my dad tells me never to get married, and that once he gets divorced, he's going to move to Colorado to live by himself. It's just.. not something I want to hear. It depresses me, and I've cried about it so much this year, and just never discussed it with any of my friends because I never wanted to get into details about it. There's just way to much to go into.

It's been so bad for the past few years, and I hate being at home. I can't wait to move out and just get away from all of it. So yeah, that's the most I've discussed about my home life on the boards. I made it sound so bad; it's not all bad.

It bites. But do, do talk to talk to someone. It mellows things out, and sets things into perspective. Even if the person doesn't offer you advice, it's just therapeutic to say what you need to say no questions asked to someone you trust. I sincerely hope it works out for your family.

re: parents

I agree with Marlene. Just talking to someone could help you.

You can laugh but this has really worked for me.
I've talked to my dog about my problems. She doesn't give advice but she also doesn't argue. She just sits there and listens to me. She knows when I'm upset and she isn't normally a cuddly dog but she sure senses when I'm not feeling well.

Of course, you may (and will probably) want to talk to a "person" but for me, my dog helps me.

Thanks for all your advice. After holding it all in for the past few months I'm starting to get all my feelings out and I've been feeling much worse at times, but also a lot better.

re: parents

I've been through this as well. I talked to school guidance counselors in middle school, but they, personally, didn't help. I can't tell you how many times I heard that annoying "It's not your fault, don't blame yourself" speech, because I knew it wasn't my fault, but that's all they seemed to ever say.

I found the strength, love, and support I needed with talking to my close friends, family, and even my parents themselves. There's nothing worse than feeling left out of the loop, especially when it's your life that's involved. Talking to my parents really helped me get a grasp on what was going on, and I'm glad I did. I have a younger sister and she and I have supported each other through a lot, so if you have siblings, look to them for support as well.

But definitely talk to your parents about it, that's my biggest bit of advice. I was reluctant to do so at first, but I don't regret it one bit, I feel if anything closer to my parents because I was able to be open with them, and them with me.
