You might want to look into AMDA.

Hey I'm transferring as well and auditioning at Millikin in about a month. Is it really all that terrible?

I would say look into Roosevelt or Columbia College, assuming you're an illinois resident. I'm auditioning at Webster too, and they've been great with me in transferring so far. I heart Hartt (spelling?) has a very transfer-friendly program. Just know you'll probably have to start over as at LEAST a soph. at most of those school, and I hope that's okay with you.

I don't really know what you mean by "character" acting or training, but if you're looking for more classical stuff, why not pursue a Vocal Performance degree with a double major in Theatre or Dance minor... something along those lines?

However, I would REALLY like to hear about Millikin because that was my fall back school!

Most places (especially conservatories) you will HAVE to start over as a freshman. Usually only academic classes will transfer and even those sometimes only count as general credits...they won't always count for a specific class.

If finances are a concern as well, I would REALLY think twice about transferring, as most schools offer very very little transfer financial aid, if any.

Well, I know someone who went to a community college for two years, and then transferred to a BFA Musical theatre school, and he only had to start out again... but I'm not sure if that would work for you though if you didn't take alot of gen. eds..

You COULD try AMDA...

I went to Marymount Manhattan College and loved every second of it. When I went there, there were a ton of transfer students... they are very welcoming and admit a lot of transfer students each semester.

The musical theater program is a minor, your major would be acting. You would get a BA or BFA in acting. When i was there the musical theater program (since its a minor) is very small and selective, but apparently the program grown a lot in the last 2 years.

If you are looking for a conservatory, then this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for an amazing acting program that will embrace your "character actor" type and help you develop further, unlike some programs which will try to make you cookie cutter, then apply! It doesn't hurt to be in NYC either!

Unless you're hell bent on going to a school...

You could always try to come to NYC, find roommates get a job and start taking private/individual classes...go to dance classes (NDG/BDC/Steps) or attend weekly acting workshops/seminars.

It's not cheap obviously, but you'd be surrounded by NYC and all it has to offer. All the vibrancy and richness of it. I don't know what your willing to do financially but hell if you got the dough go for it!

Just a suggestion :) Good luck.

Also, hating to sound like a broken record but yes AMDA is an option.

i disagree with your ruling out programs that "Arent big on character types". i myself was a transfer into CCM and had the same thoughts after hearing SOOO many false rumors about the program itself but my class is F U L L of character actors and same with some of the other classes. so give it a shot and talk to the students at these schools to get an honest opinion about the programs, student population, etc. GOOD LUCK!

I hated my first year in college too, so I took a year off and am transfering to AMDA. It's a pretty good option, as far as transfering goes. It's only 2 years, so you don't have to worry about starting over (because with pretty much every conservatory, you WILL have to start again as a freshman).

I can't talk now. I gotta go get my wallet out of the toaster.

If, as you say, your grades are awful, you are likely going to have difficulty transferring into pretty much any BFA program. It might be best to look at places like Circle in the Square in NYC, or even AADA (not to be confused with AMDA).

Hi, I was a transfer student this year and the school, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, is a great school. It's a conservatory setting in a liberal arts college. There are a lot of transfer students in the program. Though it is not a Musical Theatre Program, they have BA's and BFA's in Theatre. They also just started up a Musical Theatre Class this year. If you want to talk more about it, you can PM me.

I know for a fact that Elon is very difficult to get into and Penn does not guarantee that you will be cast. At C.W. Post it's guaranteed that everyone is cast in at least one show every semester.

Also, all of the professors either have experience or other jobs such as directing, working at NBC, being on Broadway for 12 years (my acting prof.), and all of the directors for the shows are big name directors from NYC (broadway/off-broadway) brought in to direct the shows.

If you're interested in looking at the school and program, here are a few links:

I am a transfer into Marymount this spring.. I just won a scholarship for acting and was accepted into both the BA and BFA acting! I am so excited. I can't start the theater program till september because transfers can't do most theater courses since they are full year term but, I get my core classes out of the wayyy and I am excited! Oh and almost every single one of my credits got transferred.. and I had A LOT of them.

Make sure you check out Oklahoma City University. They accept transfers and courses you have already taken. Yeah...they're hard to get into but I met a guy this summer who was more "character actor' and was accepted into the MT degree, so I guess they look for those types as well.

good luck!
