Okay, really stupid questions, I know. But take pity on me, some friends and I are planning our first trip to New York and we are really clueless.
1. Just to give me an idea of walking distance, how many miles is it from say, The Nederlander, to the Neil Simon? Is it walkable? We are staying at The Milford Plaza but we are seeing shows all over the place, and we are trying to figure out what we can walk to and when we’ll have to take a cab.
2. Two of my friends want to visit the East Village, can you just.. hail a cab in Midtown and say “take me to the East Villege?” any idea how much that would cost?

First off, take a look at your theater tickets. The street numbers of the theaters will be printed on them. If you can do math, you can figure out how far the theaters are from each other.
Secondly, very few cabdrivers speak English fluently. You may have a hard time communicating with them. It would be best to find a place in the East Village that you want to go to and give the cabdriver the address. Lately I've found myself not only telling cabdrivers where I want to go, but also giving him the directions to get there. It isn't easy when his native language is Swahili.

1) If you're seeing Broadway shows, it's all walkable. Also, we talk in blocks, not miles.
2) You can say take me to the east village but if you say that you'll be taken for a ride. You need crossroads. But why take a cab...ride the subway. We don't murder.

Any show on Broadway is walkable (except Piazza, really).
Anything between 42nd and 56th can be walked in about 15-20 mins.

Pretty much all of the Broadway theaters are within walking distance of eachother, starting around 41nd (Nederlander) and ending around 60th (Lincoln Center).
In terms of getting to the East Village you're much better off asking your friends how they get home from midtown and then doing that.
Hope I helped!
