After waiting for this movie since before the summer began, I got to it tonight (opening night). It was so worth waiting for. I absolutley LOVED it. It was undoubtedly the best film Ive seen so far this summer and one of the best thrillers of the year, if not THE best thriller of the year. The plot follows the story of a young hotel manager named Lisa (a phenomenal Rachel McAdams) who is returning home to Miami on the red eye flight. "By chance", she runs into Jackson (a deliciously frightening Cillian Murphy) and the two soon seem to be running into eachother in various spots around the airport. When the plane is finally ready to be boarded, Lisa learns that she is sitting right next to Jackson. Lisa is deathly afraid of flying we learn and Jackson sweetly and selflessly distracts her during some early turbulence and the take off but soon enough, he reveals his real purpose in Miami. He is involved in an assassination attempt against (I believe) the Secretary of State and he needs Lisa's help. The target of the assassination is staying at Lisa's hotel and Jackson needs her to change his room to one that can be accessed better by the murderers. If she refuses, Jackson alerts a man waiting outside of Lisa's father's home to kill her father. Trapped over 37,000 feet in the air with a grisly ultimatum, Lisa has nowhere to run and attempts to alert the crew about the man sitting next to her and what he plans to do but everytime, is caught, and threatened repeatedly by Jackson. PLEASE DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING During the flight, Lisa makes the call to the hotel and tells them to change the Secretary's room, agreeing to Jackson's deal. As the plane lands, Lisa grabs hold of a pen and stabs Jackson in the neck with it, barely escaping his grasp. Jackson is rediculously determined to catch her so he pulls the pen out and a cat and mouse chace ensues. Lisa just gets away from Jackson and steals a car to drive home in. She calls the hotel from her cell phone and tells the concierge to get the Secretary out of the room and clear out the hotel. Meanwhile, on the ocean right outside of the room in question, a group of men set up a missle launcher and fire it into the Secretarys room. He and his family just escape the explosion and no one is hurt. Lisa then speeds home to find the hitman hired to kill her father's car empty. She sees him in the front lawn and runs him over, killing him. She runs into the house to see if her father is alright only to see that Jackson is in the house. One of the best fight scenes Ive seen in a while with thrills, chills, spills, and heart-racing moments follows. The ending is a bit predictable (Lisa shoots Jackson but he keeps coming for her...her once unconsious father wakes up and shoots Jackson, killing him...good guys win, bad guys lose) but it's all forgiven since this movie is phenomenally entertaining.END OF HUGE SPOILER
Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Mean Girls) is beyond amazing. Everything about her performance seems so natural and real. She is delivering another excellent performance here. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, 28 Days Later) gives the creepiest performance in years. He is excellent. Seemingly kind and generous at the beginning but soon, he turns into Mr. Hyde and he is wonderfully frightening. The rest of the cast is a bit underused but I couldnt care less about their stories anyway. Wes Craven (The Scream franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street) is back, making a great directorial comeback. This film is absolutley GREAT. DO NOT MISS 'RED EYE'!
FOUR OUT OF FOUR STARS
