hey guys! ok so I have a seussical audition coming up here pretty soon and I want to get a head start. I have to have a song and a monologue, unfortunately unlike most of the other auditions Ive had I have absolutely no idea where to start! From reading past posts it seems like a lot of you guys have done this show before so Id be so greatful if you had any suggestions! Ive just never been in a show quite like this before lol. Im a mezzo/first soprano, but I am capable of singing alto-my range is pretty good (not to sound arrogant or anything). Thanks so much! seussical audition soon! any ideas!?

Hmm depends on what role you're trying for...

From your description of yourself, it doesnt' sound like you'd be the best for Sour Kangaroo or Jojo, so if you're going for The Cat in the Hat or Gertrude, sing a zany, pretty upbeat song that shows off your belt (chest voice) and your comedic abilities.

I'd suggest:
"Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls
"Hernando's Hideaway" from The Pajama Game*
"One Hundred Easy Ways" from Wonderful Town
"Shy" from Once Upon a Mattress
"If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity*

*These two are especially good for the Cat, because they can show off movement capablilties.

If you're going for Mayzie, sing something sexy, but with a somewhat innocent air.

"You've Got Possibilities" from It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman is great for that.

OMG, I absolutely looooooooove Seussical. I played Gertrude in a production last Winter. It's probably the most fun show I've ever done. I would totally kill for the chance to do it again. As far as auditions go ~ Hah. Well, I kinda did a "no-no". I opted to sing "Good Morning, Baltimore" from Hairspray, which, I'm sure is severely overdone and not to mention, still on Broadway. Buuut I friggin owned, so it all turned out okay. =D Lemme know how it goes!

I did this show this October. I remember a lot of girls singing "Popular" at auditions. Maybe they thought it was good for Mayzie or something, but DON'T SING IT.

The girl that got our Mayzie sang what a lot of people called, The Perfect Song for Mayzie. I don't know the exact name, but it's from City of Angels and it definately had a latin "feel" to it, which is just like Mayzie's big number "Amazing Mayzie". Sorry I don't know the exact name of it, but if you know the show you should be able to find it. Also I'm sure someone on here could help you find the exact name!

As for Monologues, well my advice is to go to a monologue "fake" book. For Gertrude look for something about a girl hopelessly in love with a guy, and for Mayzie look for something vain and friveless......did I spell that right.

Speaking of hopelessly in love with a guy! "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the Movie Grease would be good for Gertrude because it fits her situation with Horton down to a "T", and it can really show off your voice, IMO. I also really don't think it's too overdone, and if it is, and you felt it was a good choice, I'd do it anyways!
Also, just so you know, Gertrude does have to sing a high D above the staff at the end of a song. I wouldn't worry about that all at auditions, but at callbacks they did make all the Gertrudes do the gliss and go up that high.

As for the Sour Kangaroo. Something with a lot of sass. She kinda has a gospel feel to her music. But think maybe something from The Wiz and A'int Misbehavin'. To give you a hint, she says R-E-S-P-E-C-K, so think Aretha. Also, note that typically this part is played by a bigger lady.
