Her success is also due in no small part to her (admittedly clever) milking of the Jane Austen stories. I recall reading somewhere that Marvin Hamlisch specifically sought out singers for "They're Playing Our Song" that were entirely straight tone, because of his distaste of vibrato. And that's evident on the cast recording (both London and Broadway). Fascinating listen with that in mind.

Indeed a mixed bag but I really like the play despite its messiness and last night’s production was overall quite solid with one exception -Raul Esparza is *horrifically* miscast.
