i signed up today and already like 5 other people have added me as their friends. but i hadn't talked to them before, they just randomly searched for me and added me and were like, i just added you. anyway, it seems like it's taking off. anyone else have a facebook account?
I don't have an account at facebook, but I do have one at myspace, hotornot, and hi5
I actually posted a thread exactly like this a few weeks ago! I'm on, and I'm addicted!

thefacebook.com is the reason that I haven't been doing any of my homework.

I was browsing my university's students and it seems as if there is a lot of personal information that is posted. I was really surprised to see students posting their dorm room, etc. I was able to access this b/c I'm a prof and an alumna, but can anyone log on to any university's facebook and look at profiles? I think it's a great way to connect and network, but I worry that too much personal information is posted.
Everyone keeps talking about this...
um...
what is it?
You have to have a valid school e-mail address to sign up I believe. You can only see peoples' profiles from your own school, unless you list someone from another school as a friend and they confirm the "friendship." Then you can see their profile.
FF- it's a network of students from colleges across the country. You can post a profile and connect to other people. It's quite addicting!

I love that thing! I got on over the summer, and was completely addicted to it.
I actually just joined it the other day. I use it more to keep in touch with kids I went to HS with because you can do that on there too.

I was into it this summer, but now that I'm at school, I'm not on very often. From time to time.
Facebook is awsome. I am addicted and I beg others to get it and thne they love it. I do not give my form room or cell phone number though.
I'm on facebook! PM me if it would be all right for me to add you.
I dislike the facebook. The sense of desperation to be found and remembered by classmates is so nauseating. "Hey, accept my request to be listed as one of your friends!" Low self-esteem hasn't been that obvious since high school. I cancelled my account minutes after I started it!

Bronx- I'm glad to read that you do not give out personal info- I worry about my students who do that.
As for the request to be listed as a friend, I don't quite understand how that is desperate. Both Yahoo IM and MSN IM require the same type of confirmation. I think it's more of a security check than anything else.
I don't mean the formal request that apparently comes with the click of a mouse. I mean the fact that people feel down when someone rejects their request to be listed as a friend and that one can continue to request "friendship" even after being rejected... that's desperate whatever way you look at it! The whole thing just disgusts me. Of course, I'm a very private person, so the Facebook was not designed for the likes of me. Updated On: 10/31/04 at 05:41 PM

I understand. I'm on there as an alum and have not added people to my list. A friend's daughter added me and the request sent was similar to what I've received from IM service. However, after your explanation, I definitely understand what you mean. Thanks
