This happened in the Hudson River once. It's really unsafe.

Wow. Talk about getting lost! I'm glad to see that they're looking out for it, and have plans in mind to try and make sure it doesn't hurt itself.
"He said if attempts to re-direct the whale downstream failed, it may be necessary to put it down to prevent from suffering further."
of course they could knock it out with darts, and get divers in there, attach some sort of carrying thing and helicopter it out somewhere safe and shallow until it wakes up, but then that's probably too expensive.
It's happened twice here in the Delaware River(Trenton/Philadelphia) in the last 3 or 4 years.
I blame global warming.
Awww....I hope they succeed in directing it back downstream!
Happens quite a bit, Hopefully the whale will redirect it self and swim out to sea on its own.

Elph - they said it likely weighs around 14,000 pounds - could they really airlift that kind of load? I have NO idea, that's why I'm asking.
hmmm, I don't know.......probably not. That's a LOT of whale!
Elphaba, the whale weighs at least 7 tons, it's not that easy. I think they really are doing what they physically can, starting with the efforts to keep things like that out of the Thames to begin with.
elphaba, they can't trank it. whales and dolphins need to be awake to breathe. if they trank it, it'll sufficate. in fact, they're never fully asleep. they rest one half of their brain at a time. but yeah, the tranking's out.
Poor thing. Reading more, I understand now why they'd put him out of his misery if they can't turn him around, as the whole reason he's there is likely because he's already sick and disoriented.

Poor whale, maybe it was looking for some fish and chips.
Hope it gets back to sea.
I believe that it may be too heavy to lift, as well. Whales can crush themselves if not in bouyant water.
awww, poor whale. hope it gets safely out of there
Poor baby!!
*If you go down to the fact part, there is mention of a "sperm whale". (I think that is funny!)
umm... you've never heard of a sperm whale? ever read Moby Dick? That was a sperm whale. Ever hear of whalers in the 1800's who wanted whale oil? they usually hunted sperm whales.

Wow.
I'm not a big whale person. I think I've read Moby Dick, but I thought (and I am being totlay honest) it was a humpback whale.
nope. moby dick was a sperm whale. humpback's are the ones that sing.
Chenofan, how old are you? Not for not knowing the whale breeds, but is it really that funny?
Well, it's not the fac that it is call a "sperm whale". There is a very long (okay, not very long) story to it. (It's a stupid inside joke between some friends).

It must be specific to 'sperm', otherwise 'HUMPback' would have been funny, too.

Northern Bottlenosed Whale.
I never saw one of those before. I hope it makes it back to the ocean okay. They are usually sick when they get lost and when they beach.

When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was about my daughter-in-law taking a swim near Big Ben.
