As a grown man, 45 years old, a responsible adult I think these costumes are awful- tasteless, hurtful.
As a 19 year old college student who dressed up like Jackie Kennedy in a pink chanel suit splattered with blood 'n' brains I say "DAMN! I wish I'd thought of that!"

Personally, I find some of the comments that are posted on the link are quite disturbing, such as:
"If you can't laugh at difficult topics then there is something unhealthy in you. This ain't even slightly outrageous. "

"This is a group of college students who now think it's trendy to be upset about their friends being killed," said the Penn student.
Oh, yeah, it's SOOOO trendy that a friend of the family still hasn't gone back to school because it's too much for him. It would be fitting if Penn State gets the next shooting and that asshole's friends are the first ones hit.

The kid quoted is a self-absorbed little pr!ck who clearly lives in that little ivory tower he mentioned. Why else would he say "We do it because people look to us to be outrageous" and "OMG, people need to get over it, srsly. Only 32 people died. Tchah."
It is a personal pet peeve of mine when people trot out "Get over it." You don't "get over" something like that. You learn to cope with it, and eventually the pain lessens, but you never get over it. It's not a cold, for f**k's sake.

"It would be fitting if Penn State gets the next shooting and that asshole's friends are the first ones hit."
Is this an example of the elevated position we should be taking?

I'm with SweetQ, the replies to this article are so ridiculous.
"Would you be just as shocked if someone dressed up as a cave man dragging his wife by her hair? A civil war era slave or plantation owner costume? JFK with his head blown off? A Japanese kamikaze pilot? The uni-bomber? Charles Manson? A Columbine student? Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? It's history folks. People making light of a situation is a form of honor, its almost like a roast. It shows they actually remember it, and care enough to make a point."
Yeah, the guy who conducted the shooting at VT is a great person to honor. Are you kidding me? People are just so...obtuse. Virginia Tech is still very fresh in people's mind, but apparently since they weren't affected by it, they don't care. Besides the fact that just because its history doesn't mean it has to be classless.

Posted: 12/9/07 at 1:45amAnd for the record, I do find those examples to be in poor taste. I think some things should not be made light of (like school shootings and mass murder). Some people don't seem to realize that you can honor and remember history while still being tasteful about it. I remember the Columbine shooting perfectly well; I don't need some little twerp soaked in fake blood and laden with latex wounds to remind me that it happened, thank you very much.
#42re: which is worse? the girls dressing up like this or the paper showing i
Posted: 12/9/07 at 1:51amBut the intent of this was not to "honor" or "remember" anything; it was an attempt to invalidate people's feelings.
#43re: which is worse? the girls dressing up like this or the paper showing i
Posted: 12/9/07 at 2:05amI know, but people have defended it with the lame "remembrance" excuse.

I think by printing the photo in the paper they're only creating more controversy and hype over the incident.
Isn't that what reporters are paid to do?
