re: who smokes?

I'm 99.9% sure that Norbert Leo Butz smokes.

My friend and I were about an hour early when we went to see Wicked, and she wanted to see Idina Menzel, so we nonchalantly hung around the stage door before going a block over to see the Hairspray and Little Shop theatres. Anyways, we came back, and I'm pretty sure it was Norbert standing at the stage door smoking. And I told my friend, "Elphie" (from bwayworld.com), that I thought it was "That Norbert guy." Looked a lot like him, and he was at the Wicked stage door. Who knows.

We didn't get to see him after the show because I guess he fleed for his life, but I'm pretty sure it was him.

re: re: re: who smokes?

I find it very unattractive to see a performer smoke! When I saw TMM Tour, Mia Price lit up once she got out outside...it bothers me to know that they are ruining their voice, energy, etc.

re: re: re: who smokes?

I don't understand it, smoking is bad in the first place but its also bad for your voice isn't that kinda like career suicide? I dunno as someone who doesn't have a great vocal range as it is I can't see myself doing that to my voice.

re: re: re: who smokes?

Does it really matter who smokes and who doesn't?

re: re: re: re: who smokes?

My self-righteous chldren:
It's is an addiction! Nobody is thrilled about smoking, believe it. It's something you pick up for comfort, instant gratification, to relieve nervous tension AND THEN FIND YOU CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. GOT IT? Yes, it's lousy for your voice and your breath control on stage but -- Lemme tell you children something: I gave up alcohol 8 years ago, Christmas. I am an alcoholic in recovery. I gave up smoking 8 months ago and it made giving up alcohol seem like giving up Hagen-Das. As much as I hate it and know how rotten it is for my health, not a day has gone by when I don't seriously miss it.

Honestly people, these actors are big boys/girls and can make their own decisions about how to handle their voices, careers, and health. Why does this topic exist if not only to drop names and rude stories. I'm sure many of the smokers don't do it because they enjoy it anymore they do it because they can't stop. Show some restraint.

My father did too. And I have to admit that I was sort of freaked out when I read that David Letterman was smoking a cigarette in Baghdad last month. On the other hand, it's harder to kick cigarettes than heroin.

On the other other hand, if somebody like Roxy continues to smoke and gets a debilitating disease related to smoking, I am not sure why I or other tax payers or people who pay into the insurance pool should be forced to contribute to helping him survive a disease he could chose to get??

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: who smokes?

I have to admit, I am curious about stage actors and singers who smoke. It's the one bad habit that most directly affects the throat and vocal cords, which is what thier entire careers are founded upon.

I'd rather have any of my faves indulge in any other vice. Except barebacking.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: who smokes?

I once was bitched out for smoking by a Broadway performer whom I can assure you doesn't smoke... she was the last person to bitch me out about it... a week later I worked on quiting and have been mildly successful since (only when I'm reaaaaaaaaaaallly stressed). Yes, people do stupid things and sometimes try things they shouldn't... and when it's addicting, it's hard to stop. We're all human, we all make mistake... even broadway actors. I guess in the end it all comes down to how much one values their voice, let alone their life.

That's kind of harsh... I'm sure there are things you do that one could find just as intolerable. It's a bad habit, just like many things.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: who smokes?

BwayTheatre11, I am in no way, shape, or form condoning smoking as a vice. However, many people take up smoking when they are young, knowing the consequences or not. Since many, many actors are among the brightest minds we have, I would have to assume they knew the consequences but when you're young you have a feeling of immortality. A "that won't happen to me" mental status. That's why young people often enlist for service in the military and to fight in combat (WWII, Early Vietnam). All young people who have not experienced a young age traumatic experience have this mentality. This mentality make them think that it will be alright to smoke because they will be able to quit only to find out later on they can't. I am not condoning smoking but I am saying that we should forgive them for doing it, not start stupid topics gossiping about who does and who does not.

re: re: re: who smokes?

For those of you who are being hard on smokers, consider teh fact that most smokers start smoking in their teens. That's when I started. At that age you are wanting to look cool, to fit in, to do what the other kids are doing. You don't have the ability to look far enough into the future and see the long term effects of your actions. In spite of knowing the dangers of smoking, you belive yourself to be invinceable. Before you know it, you're addicted to smoking and can't stop even though you want to. I quit for six years, not one single cigarette in all that time. After that, I started again out of nowhere. That's how strong the addiction is. And so, I just keep trying to quite.

For those of you who have had said here that you hate smoking and will never touch a cigarette, stick to that. Don't ever believe that once you start you will be able to easily stop. It's not true.
