When you're selecting a network from your list of available ones (that would be, for me, my network and the ubiquitous Carolita), there's a check box below the authentication password. It authorizes some sort of IEEE 8.2x thingy or something.
I just turned it off and nothing has happened since.
I have found the best way to fix things is to just keep toggling your choices. YOu can't really completely f it up because, if you do, all you have to do is reset everything to its original defaults and start over.
