wireless networking

Anyone here know anything about wireless networking? I can tell you I have ROadrunner cable, I bought a Dell laptop and got the True Mobile wireless card and I have a D-Link wireless router.
Roadrunner works fine as long as I connect my laptop with the ethernet card. When I plug it into the router and use my wifi card, it picks up the network but doesn't work. I've tried all the software but I'm sort of at a loss.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueler?

Helpful, Nuggs. Really helpful.

re: wireless networking

Okay, bwaysinger - I don't know how much this is going to help, but I had the same problem. I just don't remember specifics -
on your taskbar, if you have the wireless network indicator, right click it and choose the "open network connections" option. Click the one you want to use, then open the advanced settings. Check the box to enable the device, and there are also some troubleshooting options worth a shot. Good luck!

re: wireless networking

Thanks, Emcee. Unfortunately, that's the first thing I did. I need to call Dell and see what they have to say. The wifi card is finding a network called "default" which is very clearly my network, it's saying it's connected but it's not working. I even tried opening up Explorer and setting up a new network connection, it found my wifi card and still isn't picking up.

Call Dell; they can fix all kinds of crazy stuff.

re: wireless networking

ETA: Okay, I remember now.

Go to Start->Run, and type in "cmd" (without the quotes)

You'll get a command prompt. Type in "ipconfig /release", which will release your TCP/IP stack. Then, to connect again, type in "ipconfig /renew". Don't use quotes.

You might want to try resetting your computer and trying this a couple of times. It's worked for me before when I had Internet connectivity issues.

re: wireless networking

if you have xp, you have to disable the automatic network.

re: wireless networking

Just checking to make sure you disabled your ethernet connection when you enabled your wireless connection in network settings. That was the problem I had when I first went wireless. Luckily the guy who owns the coffee shop next door works for microsoft so he knew how to fix it.

re: wireless networking

Update: Midnight dolphin, it would appear your advice was the right stuff! The wireless network works! Thanks so much. This is after I purposfully turned on the automatic network, thinking it would need to detect my settings!

re: wireless networking

The best thing about wireless networking is that it makes it easy to havk into your neighbor's computer and download dirty pictures of his wife.

re: wireless networking

Well, there is a woman named Carolita in my building with a password protected network too...I'll let you know if I get in.

So, update for you guys: the network works really well, but on occasion it just stops getting a signal and I have to "Refind" my network. Is this just something I'm going to have to deal with? I thought it might be signal strength but I'm sitting 10 feet from the router/cable modem and it is still doing it.

re: wireless networking

I typically don;t have that problem at home and have the same card you do -- of course calling Dell can be tiresome -- maybe our resident expert, dolphin can help...

re: wireless networking

Actually, I think I solved it. Had another stupid thing clicked. It didn't make sense, so I unclicked it and haven't been booted since.
