I agree, Iflit
Having said that, many trial lawyers are ambulance chasers pure & simple. Like many people complain about the cost of gas but think nothing of paying for overpriced Starbucks. People want more energy but do not want a power plant built near them. They want cheap energy but will not allow nucleur plants to be built . The more nuke plants ( with the problem of spent fuel dealth with intelligently) the less dependent we are on foreign oil. They scream abort high gas prices while they fuel their gas guzzlers. We, as a people, have a short memory which is one reason we are having the problems we have now
Back to the matter of high medical insurance. There are many reasons but to blame it all on greedy insurance companies (which they probably are ) is disengenuous
You're looking for logic in all the wrong places, Namey.

When will I ever learn, Iflit?
Of course Roxy is right. If people had remembered W's first four years then we wouldn't BE in this mess. If people had remembered Viet Nam we wouldn't BE in this mess. If Rove had remembered Watergate he wouldn't BE in this mess.
People scream about gas prices but won't spend a little more upfront on a hybrid car. People want energy and solar and wind power become more and more reliable options but the system is set up to keep those options from being fully investigated. Nuclear power as it is has not been shown to be safe, when it is I will be in favor of its use.
There are cases that should not be in court and should be thrown out, yet the ability to use the civil court system to inact positive change is very important. Our entire judical system has serious errors, those errors should all be addressed. Not just the ones that effect some people's pocketbooks.

To backtrack for a moment - what would be the best way to deal with an obese friend?
Do nothing, until they themselves realize the error of their ways? Or failing that, die?
I have been accused of using Logic in the past, I am trying to stop. It is a hard habit to break, if you ever start. (seems to be hard for some to ever start though.)
Orph, I think so much deals with the overall health, age, and mental state of the friend it is impossible to properly answer that question.
Of course, shaming and doing nothing are only the only answers if you think in absolutes.
To Penguin
Any power genration can be fraught with danger. Fossil fules - global warming. There are people who are against windpower as it spoils their views & they do not want windmills near them . In many ways we are selfish. We want more & more power but want to make no sacrifices. Maybe there is a power fairy where, if we click our heels 3 times, we will have all the power we want

orph if the person is your friend talk to them. Out of the love you feel for them. Let them know how you love them and you want them to be around for a long time(or whatever other silly thing comes out of our mouths in those difficult moments.) And then just let it go. If you start to attack your friend for his own good then imo you've stopped being the kind of friend I want.
While it is true that there are problems with all of those power sources, do you not think a veiw with a windmill in it is a bit less of a problem than spent uranium rods that retain their radioactivity for centuries?
I am not a rabid person or an idealist. I have ideals I want to see implemented in rational ways. There will always be sacrifice, I think it is important we choose to sacrifice the right things, for the right reasons.
As far as shaming someone into taking action, you have to consider the fact that peopel don't willing choose to be obese. Anyone who is dangerously obese is either suffering from a physical condition, depressed or not aware of proper nutrition.
In the past, when I worked in mental health, I encountered many patients who were dangerously obese. The raesons were depression, boredom, lack of ability or knowledge about what to do other than sit in front of a tv and eat and poverty and lack of education. Shaming these epople would only make the situation worse. Any good doctor should realize this, but if the doctor doesn't, it's no reason for a lawsuit...it's raeson to find a new doctor. I once met with a potentail new doctor who I felt was incompetent and just plain ignorant. I never saw him again.
Iflit, I agree with you on your view that part of the balme for fivolis lawsuits and soaring helathacre costs has to be placed on teh people who hire these sleazy lawyers. However, have you ever noticed where and when most of them advertise? Daytime tv, Jerry Springer, the multitude of court shows like People's Court and other shows like that. Every second commercial is a laywer telling you all the ridiculous things taht you can sue someone over and promising you that their annoying behavior toward a comapny will get you money. They prey on the people who most desperately want a better life and better financial situation.
Who is sitting at home watching this stuff and seeing teh cmmercials? The unemployed, the empoverished and the mentally ill. Again, drawing on past experience, i had one client who was borderline personality disorder, had a 4th grade education and living in a housing project collecting government asistance. When Attorney Dane Shulman popped on the tv screen in the middle of Springer and told her about medcial malpractice and slip and fall accidents, she ran out to Neiman Marcus, fell on their floor and went of to the ER where she claimed the doctors mistreated her injuries.
1. Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like She lodged a complaint with the medical board, she didn't sue the doctor.
2. It wasn't that he told her she was "overweight" it was that he made personal remarks about her love life and such.
3. Doctors like this make fat people afraid to go to the doctor. When I was a kid I hated going to the doctor. I hated being weighted in and then told I was fat more than getting shots. I now have an intense fear of the medical profession.
4. Some doctors are insensitive A-holes.
5. Being fat doesn't automatically mean you are going to die early. He apparently hasn't read a great deal of research and just goes along with all the hype.
6. Lets not hate on the fat people...people complain about this much more minor than this. I'm not saying that I agree in sum with the complaint, but the medical profession needs to be more sensitive.
7. As others have said, Obesity isn't a disease. It's a symptom. Of a mal-functioning metabolism, emotional problem, or lack of proper nutrition and exercise. It depends on the person. I just dislike when people day it's a disease because it's not.
8. Most fat people are not lazy slobs who eat bon-bons all day. Sure some are, but so are some average & thin people. Good nutrition and exercise should be advocated for all. The focus shouldn't be weight.
9. You have to be careful how you handle weight, especially with kids. I grew up thinking I was fat. I was sent to a fat camp at 9 years old...I figured I must be huge. I was probably about 7 lbs overweight and I was very active and didn't overeat at the time. If a kid is active and you feed them well, don't worry about their weight...unless they are very very big in which cast it's probably a metabolic disorder.

You're right, Buffy.
As the saying goes, "First do no harm." Shame is harmful.
People do much better with T. Barry Brazelton-type caregivers than obnoxious, rude Dr. Laura-types.
